Child Safety Seat
Child safety seats are available in a wide variety of sizes and designs. Depending on the shape and size of the interior and seats, only certain types of child safety seats are suitable for your vehicle.
You are responsible for selecting the correct child safety seat and for installing it properly in a vehicle that provides seat belts and a child seat anchoring system for this purpose.
Using a child safety seat that is not suitable for this vehicle, or installing it incorrectly, may result in serious injury to the child and other occupants in a collision.
After purchasing a child safety seat, read and strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and use of the system.
A child safety seat must match the child's age, height and weight, and must fit and install securely in the specific vehicle.
Various types of child safety seats are available for children of different ages. Children who are too small or too light cannot use the vehicle seat belt system safely.
This vehicle is designed to accommodate a universal child safety seat only on the outboard rear seats.
• Do not install a universal child safety seat on the front passenger seat and/or the rear center seat.
Vehicle accident statistics show that the rear seat, not the front seat, is the safer location for children.
Older children who no longer fit a child safety seat should sit in the rear seat and wear the seat belt so that the shoulder portion passes as far from the neck as possible and the lap portion lies low across the hips.
Check the seat belt position regularly to ensure it provides proper protection.
If a child sits in the front seat, make sure the shoulder belt does not pass across the child's head or neck.
This may require moving the child closer to the center of the vehicle so that the seat belt passes across the child's shoulder.
Do not allow a child to stand or kneel on the seat or in other areas of the vehicle while driving.
If a child safety seat is not in use, secure it with the seat belt or remove it from the vehicle.
• Never hold a child in your arms while the vehicle is in motion. Infants and small children must be seated in an appropriate child safety seat.
• In a collision, a child cannot be held in your arms because of the forces involved. For example, in a collision at only 40 km/h, the load on the arms from a child weighing 5.5 kg reaches 110 kg.
• Failure to use an appropriate child safety seat for infants and small children in a collision may result in injury or death.
• Traffic accident statistics show that a child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat rather than the front seat.
• Do not install a child safety seat on the front passenger seat if the vehicle is equipped with a side airbag. For more information, see "SIDE AIRBAGS" in the index.
• Extremely dangerous! Never use a rear-facing child safety seat on a seat equipped with a front airbag! Install a rear-facing child safety seat only in the rear seat.
