Seat Belt Pretensioner

The driver and front passenger seats are equipped with a seat belt pretensioner system.
Seat belts equipped with pretensioners can be used in the same way as conventional seat belts.
Activation of the seat belt pretensioner system depends on the severity of the impact. In addition, the seat belt pretensioners are controlled by deceleration sensors and the airbag system electronic control unit.
A pretensioner is located in each front seat belt retractor.
The pretensioner tightens the seat belt so that, in a frontal collision, the belt fits more snugly against the occupant's body.
After the pretensioners are activated, the seat belt retractors remain locked. Activation of the pretensioners is accompanied by a small noise and some smoke.
These phenomena are not harmful and do not indicate a fire in the vehicle.
To reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a collision, the driver and passengers must always wear their seat belts, regardless of whether the front seat belt systems are equipped with pretensioners. Sit fully back in the seat; sit upright; do not lean forward or to the side.
Adjust the belt so that the lower part of the belt is positioned across the pelvis, not the lower back.
Note that the pretensioners activate only in severe frontal collisions. They are not designed to activate in rear or side impacts, rollovers, or minor frontal collisions.
Pretensioners activate only once. After the pretensioners have been activated, the seat belt pretensioner system must be serviced immediately by an authorized Chevrolet dealer.
If the airbag warning indicator does not flash or illuminates briefly when the ignition is switched on, stays on for more than 10 seconds, or comes on while driving, the pretensioner or airbag system may be faulty. Both systems must be inspected by an authorized Chevrolet dealer as soon as possible.
Service of the pretensioner system components or its wiring must be performed only by an authorized Chevrolet dealer who has completed special training. Improper service may cause unintended pretensioner deployment or pretensioner malfunction.
Both of these options may result in injury.
