Gear lever

~2min read

The gear lever A fig. 83, located on the dashboard, is a floating "multi-stable" type, meaning it can assume three stable positions and three unstable positions.

The three stable positions are neutral (N), reverse (R), and the central position located between the unstable positions (+) and (–).

The unstable positions, i.e. those the lever leaves as soon as it is released, are instead the upshift request position (+), the downshift request position (–), and the automatic operating mode request position (A/M).

WARNING With the engine running, any mismatch between the lever position and the gear actually engaged is signalled by an audible warning until the two are matched again.

Manual logic (manual)

Proceed as follows:

  • press the brake pedal and start the engine;
  • if AUTO is shown on the display, push the lever A fig. 83 to A/M to select MANUAL mode;
  • push the gear lever A towards (+) to engage first gear (if coming from N or R, simply move the lever to the central position), or to R to engage reverse;
  • release the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal;
  • while driving, push the gear lever A towards (+) to engage the next higher gear, or towards (–) to engage the next lower gear.

Automatic logic (auto)

Proceed as follows:

  • press the brake pedal;
  • start the engine;
  • if AUTO is not shown on the display, push the gear lever A fig. 83 to A/M to select AUTOMATIC mode;
  • push the gear lever towards (+) to engage 1st gear (if coming from N or R, simply move the lever to the central position), or to R to engage reverse;
  • release the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal: the appropriate gear for the vehicle speed will be engaged.

Auto-eco operation

To activate the function, press the ECO button fig. 84 on the centre tunnel. The ECO function can only be activated with automatic logic engaged.

With the ECO function active, the system selects the most suitable gear according to vehicle speed, engine speed and how far the accelerator pedal is pressed, with the aim of reducing fuel consumption.
