Using Summer Tires. Using Traction Chains
Using Summer Tires
Summer tires provide superior handling on wet and dry roads. Summer tires do not have the mud and snow (M+S or M/S) marking on the tire sidewall. Since summer tires do not have the same traction characteristics as all-season or winter tires, we do not recommend using summer tires when temperatures drop to approximately 45°F (7°C) or below, depending on tire wear and environmental conditions, or in snow and ice conditions. As with any tire, summer tire performance depends on tire wear and environmental conditions. If you must drive in these conditions, we recommend using Mud and Snow (M+S, M/S), All-Season, or Snow tires.
Always store summer tires indoors where the temperature is above 19°F (-7°C). The rubber compounds used in these tires lose flexibility and surface cracks may form in the tread area at temperatures below 19°F (-7°C). If tires have been exposed to 19°F (-7°C) or below, warm them in a heated area to at least 41°F (5°C) for no less than 24 hours before installing them on the vehicle, or before driving the vehicle with the installed tires or checking tire inflation. Always check tires after storage periods and before use.
Using Traction Chains
The tires on your vehicle may have all-season treads for rain and snow traction. In some climatic conditions, you may need to use winter tires and chains on your vehicle in an emergency or where required by law.
Follow these guidelines when using snow tires and chains:
- Chains may damage aluminum wheels.
- Use ultra-low profile cables, 10 mm or less in size measured on the sidewall of your tire, only with All-Season tires 225/60R18.
- Do not use traction chains or cables with 225/55R19 or 245/45R20 tires.
- Not all S-Class traction chains or cables conform to these restrictions. Chains with this size restriction will include a tensioning device.
- Purchase chains or cables from a manufacturer that clearly marks the housing with the tire size restrictions. Snow chains or cables must be installed in pairs on the rear wheels only.
- When driving with traction chains, do not exceed 30 mph (50 km/h) or the maximum speed recommended by the chain manufacturer, whichever is less.
- Secure the cables firmly, making sure they do not contact any wiring or brake lines.
- Drive carefully. If you hear the cables rubbing or banging against the vehicle, stop and retighten them. If this does not work, remove the cables to prevent vehicle damage.
- Remove traction chains when they are no longer needed. Do not use tire chains on dry roads.
If you have questions about snow chains or cables, contact an authorized dealer.
