Vehicle Storage
If the vehicle will not be operated for an extended period (more than one month), it must be properly prepared for storage. Proper storage preparation helps prevent deterioration of the vehicle and makes it easier to return it to normal operation later. The best storage conditions are provided in an enclosed garage.
• Fill the fuel tank completely.
• Wash the vehicle exterior, then dry the body thoroughly.
• Clean the vehicle interior. Make sure the upholstery and floor mats are completely dry.
• Release the parking brake. On vehicles with a manual transmission, engage reverse gear. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, select P (Park).
• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• If the vehicle is to be stored for a long period, place it on stands so that the wheels are fully raised off the ground.
• Open one window slightly (if the vehicle is stored indoors).
• Disconnect the cables from the battery terminals.
• Place rolled paper towels or cloth under the front and rear wiper arms so the wiper blades do not contact the glass surface.
• To prevent sticking, apply protective silicone compound from an aerosol can to all rubber seals of the side door and tailgate openings. Then apply polish to the paint along the door perimeter in areas that contact the rubber seals of the side door and tailgate openings.
• Cover the vehicle with a breathable cover, such as one made of cotton fabric. Using heavy, impermeable covers made of plastic film will damage the body paint due to high humidity under the cover.
• If possible, start the engine periodically and run it long enough to warm it up to operating temperature (the cooling fan should switch on and off twice). It is recommended to do this at least once a month.
For vehicles with a diesel engine only: • If the vehicle has not been used for a long time, water may accumulate in the fuel system and the engine may not start. In this case, it may be necessary to drain water from the fuel filter (see "Draining Water" on page 462).
If the vehicle has been stored for 1 year or longer, perform all maintenance operations that are normally required every 24 months or 40000 km in accordance with the maintenance schedule* before returning the vehicle to normal use. Oil and filter changes, and replacement of other fluids specified in the maintenance schedule, are not required if the period of use or the actual mileage has not reached the values specified in the schedule.
* The maintenance schedule for vehicles sold in EU countries and South Africa is provided in a separate service booklet.
