Timing Belt Tension Adjustment
Timing belt tension is adjusted automatically by the tensioner.
PROCEDURE
1. Turn the steering wheel counterclockwise to the stop.

2. Support the engine oil pan with a wooden block and raise the engine slightly.

3. Remove the left engine mount.
4. Remove the water pump pulley.

5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

6. Remove the upper timing belt cover.
7. Inspect the timing belt for delamination, damage and other defects. Make sure the belt is checked along its entire length.

8. Rotate the crankshaft so that the No. 1 cylinder piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. Align the mark on the crankshaft timing belt sprocket with the pointer on the engine cylinder block. Check that the mark on the camshaft sprocket is aligned with the pointer on the cylinder head cover.
9. Remove the lower timing belt cover.

10. Loosen tensioner mounting bolts 1 and 2 in the sequence shown in the illustration. This will release the timing belt tensioner spring.

11. Check the belt routing on the engine pulleys.
12. Tighten tensioner mounting bolts 1 and 2 in the same sequence.
13. Rotate the engine crankshaft clockwise one full turn and align the mark on the crankshaft timing belt sprocket with the pointer on the engine cylinder block.
Do not rotate the engine crankshaft counterclockwise.
14. Loosen tensioner mounting bolts 1 and 2 in the same sequence.

15. Retighten tensioner mounting bolts 1 and 2 in the same sequence.
Tightening torque: 20-27 N·m

16. Recheck the timing belt tension. When pressing the tension side of the timing belt with a force of 49 N, the timing belt should deflect to the center of the tensioner mounting bolt head.
