PROCEDURE

1. Install the upper main bearing inserts into the cylinder block. When reinstalling the inserts, place them in the same positions they occupied before removal.
2. Before installing the crankshaft, apply a thin layer of clean engine oil to all sliding surfaces. Install the crankshaft onto the main bearing inserts in the cylinder block.
3. Install the remaining main bearing inserts into the crankshaft main bearing caps. Install the crankshaft main bearing caps according to the markings, with the arrow on each cap facing the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the crankshaft main bearing cap bolts in 2 or 3 steps, in the following sequence: center, No. 2, No. 4, front and rear.

Tightening Torque:

Crankshaft main bearing caps: 55–60 N·m
Connecting rod bearing caps: 32–35 N·m

4. Turn the crankshaft and check that it rotates smoothly and easily. Install the dial indicator probe on the front end of the crankshaft. Push the crankshaft fully in one direction along its axis and set the dial indicator scale to zero. Push the crankshaft fully in the other direction along its axis and read the axial play value on the dial indicator scale.

Crankshaft end play: 0.050–0.175 mm

5. Lubricate the outer surface of the new rear oil seal with engine oil. Using Special Service Tool 09231–22000, install the oil seal fully into the rear cover bore.
6. Install the oil seal cover, gasket and tighten the 5 bolts. During installation, lubricate the sealing lips and outer surface of the oil seal with clean engine oil.
7. Install the rear cover and secure it with the bolts.
8. Install the connecting rod caps.
9. Install the flywheel, front cover, oil pan and timing belt.
