If a tire is flat

If you need to replace a flat tire, do so only after taking all precautions to stop the vehicle safely in a place where there is no danger to you and your passengers, on a level surface, and in such a way as to avoid injury from any component while changing the tire.

1. Comply with the regulations in your country regarding disabled vehicles: turn on the hazard warning lights, place warning triangles or flashing warning lamps at an appropriate distance from the vehicle, etc. Passengers must exit the vehicle and wait in a safe place.

2. Position the vehicle on a level, firm surface and apply the parking brake. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when raised with the jack, place a wheel chock under the wheel diagonally opposite the wheel being changed.
3. Prepare the spare tire, jack and wheel nut wrench.

4. For safety, place the spare tire under the vehicle and near the jack for easy access.

5. Loosen the wheel nuts with the wheel nut wrench as shown in the illustration. Do not remove the wheel nuts yet.
6. Refer to the "Jacking the Vehicle" section to select the jacking point near the flat tire and position the jack there. Then raise the vehicle until the tire is slightly off the ground. Remove the wheel nuts.

7. Remove dirt, etc. from the hub surface or the wheel mounting holes, then install the spare tire.
8. If the threaded side of the wheel nuts faces the wheel (see
illustration), screw the nuts onto the bolts and tighten by hand so the wheel is secured.

CAUTION:
Do not apply oil to the wheel nuts or bolts, as this may cause them to loosen.

Slowly lower the vehicle, then tighten each nut in turn to the specified torque.

CAUTION:
When tightening the wheel nuts, do not apply excessive force. For example, do not step on the wheel nut wrench or use a pipe or similar tool.
10. Remove the wheel chock from under the wheel.
11. Install the wheel cover, then lightly tap the edge of the wheel cover by hand.
12. Repair and balance the faulty tire as soon as possible.
13. After replacing the spare tire with the original tire, adjust the tire pressure to the correct specification.
