Trailer Towing or Vehicle Towing

If you intend to tow anything with your vehicle, first check the requirements of local authorities. Laws and regulations governing the towing of trailers, vehicles, other types of vehicles or machinery differ between regions. Before towing, obtain more detailed information from your Hyundai dealer.

CAUTION:

Do not tow anything until your vehicle has covered the first 2,000 km (1,200 miles) to break in the engine. Failure to observe this may cause serious damage to the engine or transmission.

Trailer hitches Select the correct hitch and ball combination, and make sure their position is compatible with the trailer or vehicle being towed. Use a high-quality, non-sway hitch that distributes the load evenly over the frame.

The hitch must be securely bolted to the vehicle and installed by a qualified technician.

DO NOT USE A HITCH DESIGNED FOR TEMPORARY INSTALLATION, OR A HITCH THAT ATTACHES ONLY TO THE BUMPER.

Trailer brakes If your trailer is equipped with a braking system, make sure it complies with federal and/or local requirements and that it is installed correctly and functions accurately.

If you are towing a trailer or vehicle, maintenance will be required more often due to the additional load. Refer to "Severe Usage Maintenance" on page 6-8.

CAUTION:

• Do not connect the trailer brake system directly to the vehicle brake system.

• When towing a trailer on a steep grade (more than 12 %), closely monitor the engine coolant temperature gauge to avoid engine overheating.

If the engine coolant temperature gauge needle moves toward the "H" (HOT) mark, stop at the first safe opportunity and let the engine idle to cool. Once the engine has cooled sufficiently, you may continue driving.

Safety chains If the connection between your vehicle and the towed trailer or vehicle fails, the trailer or vehicle may move into another lane and then collide with another vehicle.

To eliminate this potentially dangerous situation, most regions require safety chains to be attached between your vehicle and the towed trailer or vehicle.

Trailer weight limit

Tongue load can be increased or decreased by redistributing the trailer load. This can be controlled by checking the total loaded trailer weight and then checking the tongue load.

1. Do not load the trailer more heavily at the rear than at the front. Approximately 60 % of the trailer load should be on the front half of the trailer and the remaining 40 % on the rear half.

2. The total weight of the vehicle with the trailer must not exceed the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) shown on the vehicle identification label (see

p. 1-2). The Gross Vehicle Weight is the combined weight of the vehicle, driver, all passengers and their baggage, cargo, hitch, tongue load of the trailer and other optional equipment.

3. The weight on the front or rear axle must not exceed the GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating, the maximum weight the front and rear axles can carry) specified on the vehicle certification label (see p. 1-2).

The towed combination may not exceed the GVWR, but may exceed the GAWR.

Improper loading of the trailer and/or excessive baggage near the rear door may overload the rear axle. Redistribute the load and check the axle weight again.

4. The maximum permissible static vertical load on the entire hitch is 75 kg.

CAUTION:

The following specifications are recommended when towing a trailer. For safety, the loaded trailer weight must not exceed the values shown in the table.

CAUTION:

• Improper loading of the vehicle and trailer can seriously affect steering and braking and may result in an accident with serious injury.

• For vehicles with an automatic transmission, the trailer must be towed with the towing vehicle unloaded, excluding the driver. Otherwise, the automatic transmission fluid temperature may rise to a level that can cause serious damage to the automatic transmission.
