If the engine overheats

If the temperature gauge indicates overheating, you will feel a loss of power or hear a loud hissing noise or knocking. The engine may be too hot. If this happens, you must:
1. Pull off the road and stop at the first safe location.
2. Shift the gear selector to "P" (automatic transmission) or "N" (manual transmission) and apply the parking brake.
If the air conditioner is on, turn it off.

3. If engine coolant is leaking from under the vehicle or steam is coming out from under the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until the engine coolant stops leaking or the steam stops. If no coolant leak is visible and there is no steam, leave the engine running and check that the engine cooling fan operates properly. If the fan does not work, turn off the engine.
4. Check the water pump drive belt for good condition. If it is in good condition, check its tension. If the drive belt looks satisfactory, check for engine coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses, or underneath the vehicle. (If an air conditioner is used, dripping water from it when stopped is normal for cold water.)
CAUTION:
While the engine is running, be careful to keep hair, hands, long hair, or clothing away from moving parts such as the cooling fan and drive belts.
5. If the water pump drive belt is damaged or engine coolant is leaking, stop the engine immediately and contact the nearest Hyundai dealer for assistance.
CAUTION:
Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot, as this may cause coolant to spray out of the opening and result in serious burns.

6. If you cannot determine the cause of overheating, wait until the engine temperature returns to normal. Then, if engine coolant has escaped, carefully remove the radiator cap and add engine coolant up to the middle mark on the reservoir.
7. Proceed carefully, considering the danger of other overheating symptoms. If overheating occurs again, contact a Hyundai dealer for assistance.
CAUTION:
A significant loss of engine coolant indicates a leak in the cooling system, and a Hyundai dealer should inspect it as soon as possible.
