Automatic Transaxle Fluid Check (if equipped)

Automatic transmission fluid must be replaced at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule in Chapter 6.

Recommended Fluid

The Hyundai automatic transmission is designed to use "DIAMOND ATF DEXRON II" or "DIAMOND ATF SP I" fluid.

Automatic Transmission Fluid Capacity

The automatic transmission fluid capacity is listed on page 9-4.

Check the transmission fluid level when the engine is at normal operating temperature. This means the engine, radiator, exhaust system, etc. are very hot.

Exercise extreme caution during this procedure to avoid getting burned.

How to Check the Automatic Transmission Fluid Level

Park the vehicle on a level surface with the parking brake applied. Check the transmission fluid level when the transmission fluid is at normal operating temperature and the engine is at idle.

With the engine idling, apply the brakes and shift the selector lever from "P" through each position - "R", "N", "D", "2", "L" - and then return to "N" or "P" while the engine is still idling:

1. Open the hood. Be careful to keep your hands, long hair, and clothing away from moving parts.

2. Remove the transmission fluid level gauge, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and pull it out again. Check the fluid level on the gauge. The level should be within the "HOT" range on the gauge.

3. If the transmission fluid level is low, add transmission fluid through the gauge tube using a funnel until the level reaches the "HOT" range. Do not overfill, as this may damage the transmission.

The engine coolant temperature controls the radiator fan, and the fan sometimes operates even after the ignition switch is turned off.

Use extreme caution when working near the cooling fan blades to avoid injury. When the engine coolant temperature drops, the fan turns off automatically. This is normal.
