System Limitations

~4min read

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system is designed to help avoid or reduce the risk of a collision with a vehicle or pedestrian ahead on the road through radar and camera recognition signals. It warns the driver of an imminent collision and, if necessary, applies emergency braking.

In certain situations, the radar sensor or camera may not detect a vehicle or pedestrian ahead. In these cases, the FCA system may not operate normally. The driver should be especially attentive in the following situations, where FCA operation may be limited.

Vehicle Detection

The sensor may be limited when:

  • The radar sensor or camera is blocked by a foreign object or debris
  • Severe weather, such as heavy rain or snow, obstructs the field of view of the radar sensor or camera
  • There is electromagnetic wave interference
  • Strong uneven reflection from the radar sensor is present.
  • Radar sensor/camera recognition is limited
  • The vehicle ahead is too small to be detected (e.g., a motorcycle, bicycle, etc.).
  • The vehicle ahead is a large vehicle or trailer that is too large to be detected by the camera recognition system (e.g., a tractor trailer, etc.).
  • The driver's field of view is poorly lit (either too dark, or too much glare or backlight obstructing the view).
  • The tail lights of the vehicle ahead are not illuminated properly.
  • External brightness changes suddenly, such as when entering or exiting a tunnel.
  • Light from a street lamp or an oncoming vehicle is reflected on a wet road surface, such as a puddle on the road.
  • The forward field of view is restricted by sun glare.
  • The windshield is fogged; a clear view of the road is obstructed.
  • The vehicle ahead is driving erratically.
  • The vehicle is on a gravel or rough, uneven surface, or on a road with sudden changes in gradient
  • The vehicle is driven near areas containing metallic structures, such as construction zones, railroad tracks, etc.
  • The vehicle is driving inside a building, such as an underground parking garage.
  • Adverse road conditions cause excessive vehicle vibration while driving.
  • Sensor recognition changes suddenly when driving over a speed bump.
  • The vehicle ahead is moving laterally across the direction of travel.
  • The vehicle ahead is stopped across the direction of travel.
  • The vehicle ahead is moving toward your vehicle or is reversing.
Hyundai Ioniq. Limitations of the System

- Driving on curves

FCA operation may be limited when driving on a curved road.

On curved roads, another vehicle in the same lane may not be recognized, and FCA system performance may deteriorate. This may result in unnecessary alarm or braking, or no alarm or braking when required.

In addition, in some cases the front radar sensor or camera recognition system may not detect a vehicle traveling on a winding road.

In these cases, the driver must maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Ioniq. Limitations of the System

The FCA system may recognize a vehicle in an adjacent lane when driving on a curved road.

In this case, the system may warn the driver unnecessarily and apply the brakes.

Always pay attention to the road and driving conditions while driving. If necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

In addition, if necessary, depress the accelerator pedal to prevent the system from unnecessarily decelerating your vehicle.

Check the surrounding traffic conditions before use.

Hyundai Ioniq. Limitations of the System

- Driving on slopes

FCA performance is reduced when driving uphill or downhill. It may not recognize a vehicle ahead in the same lane. It may unnecessarily issue a warning message and warning signal, or it may not issue a warning message and warning signal at all.

When FCA suddenly recognizes a vehicle ahead while driving on a slope, you may experience sudden deceleration.

Always look ahead when driving uphill or downhill and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain distance.

Hyundai Ioniq. Limitations of the System

- Lane change

When a vehicle changes lanes in front of you, the FCA system may not detect the vehicle immediately, especially if it changes lanes abruptly. In this case, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Ioniq. Limitations of the System

When driving in stop-and-go traffic, or when a vehicle stopped ahead of you is merging out of your lane, the FCA system may not immediately detect the new vehicle ahead of you. In this case, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, press the brake pedal to reduce speed and maintain a safe distance.

Hyundai Ioniq. Limitations of the System

- Detection of the vehicle ahead

If the vehicle ahead has a load extending rearward from the cab, or if the vehicle ahead has a high ground clearance, additional special attention is required. The FCA system may not be able to detect a load extending from the vehicle. In such cases, maintain a safe braking distance from the rearmost object and, if necessary, depress the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain distance.
