Automatic transmission fluid level check

The automatic transmission fluid level must be checked regularly.

Park the vehicle on a level surface with the parking brake applied, and check the automatic transmission fluid according to the following notes.

1. Move the shift lever to the Neutral (N) position and make sure the engine is running at idle.

NOTICE

Insert the dipstick after checking the automatic transmission fluid level, in the direction shown in the illustration.

DANGER

If the dipstick is not inserted correctly, it may bend or be damaged.

2. When the automatic transmission is sufficiently warm (fluid temperature 70~80 °C), for example after approximately 10 minutes of normal driving, move the shift lever through all of the shift positions, then return it to the Neutral (N) or Park (P) position.

3. Make sure the fluid level on the dipstick is within the "HOT" range. If the fluid level is below this range, add the specified fluid through the filler hole. If the fluid level is above this range, drain fluid through the drain hole.

4. When the fluid level is checked under cold conditions (20~30 °C), add fluid up to the "COLD" mark on the dipstick, then check the fluid level again according to step 2 above.

WARNING

Manual transmission oil

The transmission fluid level must be checked with the engine warm. This means the engine, radiator, radiator hoses, exhaust system, etc. may be very hot. Take extreme care and do not touch hot components to avoid burns.

DANGER

  • A fluid level that is too low causes transmission slipping. A fluid level that is too high may cause foaming, fluid loss, and transmission malfunction.
  • Using other, non-specified fluids may cause transmission malfunction and failure.

WARNING

Parking brake

Apply the parking brake and depress the brake pedal before moving the shift lever to prevent sudden vehicle movement.

NOTICE

The "COLD" mark is for reference only and must NOT be used to determine the transmission fluid level.

NOTICE

New automatic transmission fluid is red in color. The red color is used to distinguish it from other fluids, such as engine oil or antifreeze. Red color is not an indicator of fluid condition and does not remain constant. As the vehicle is driven, automatic transmission fluid gradually darkens. The color may sometimes change to light brown.

Use only the specified automatic transmission fluid. (Refer to "Recommended Lubricants and Fill Capacities" on page 9-10.)

Automatic transmission fluid replacement

Drain the automatic transmission fluid in accordance with the maintenance schedule at a specialized workshop. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer/service partner.
