AIRBAG DISPOSAL

REQUIRED SPECIAL TOOLS

Release tool 0957A-34100A

Before disposing of airbags or side airbags (including airbags located in vehicles to be scrapped completely), the airbags or side airbags must be deployed. If the vehicle is still under warranty, contact the technical manager before deploying the airbags or side airbags and/or follow their specific instructions. Airbags or side airbags may only be disposed of after deployment (for example, after an accident). If the airbags or side airbags still appear intact (i.e., not deployed), handle them with special care. Proceed as follows:

DEPLOYING AIRBAGS IN THE VEHICLE

If a vehicle equipped with an SRS is to be scrapped completely, the airbags or side airbags may be deployed while still inside the vehicle. Airbags or side airbags must not be regarded as reusable parts and therefore must not be reinstalled in another vehicle.

  1. Turn the ignition OFF, disconnect the battery ground terminal, and wait at least three minutes.

  2. Check that all airbags and side airbags are securely mounted.

  3. Using the inspection procedure, confirm that the special device operates correctly.

    1. DRIVER AIRBAG:

      • Remove the driver airbag and install special tool (0K57A-3U100A).

      • Install the driver airbag to the steering wheel.

    2. PASSENGER AIRBAG:

      • Remove the glove box, then disconnect the connector between the passenger airbag and the main SRS wiring harness.

      • Install special tool (0K57A-3U100A).

    3. SIDE AIRBAG:

      • Disconnect 2P connector between the side airbag and the side wiring harness.

      • Attach special tool (0957A-2W100).

    4. HEAD AIRBAG (CURTAIN AIRBAG):

      • Disconnect 2P connector between the curtain airbag and the side wiring harness.

      • Install special tool (0K57A-3U100A).

    5. SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS:

      • Disconnect the 2P connector from the seat belt pretensioner.

      • Install special tool (0K57A-3U100A).

    6. Emergency safing device:

      • Disconnect 2P connector from the pretensioner mount.

      • Install special tool (0K57A-3U100A).

  4. Place the igniter device at least 10 meters from the airbag.

  5. Connect a 12-volt battery to the device.

  6. Press the ignition switch. The airbag must deploy (the deployment is clearly audible and visible: a loud noise and rapid inflation of the airbag, followed by slow deflation).

  7. Dispose of the airbag as a whole. No part may be reused. Place it in a strong polyethylene bag and tie it tightly.

DEPLOYING AIRBAG OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE

If an intact airbag was removed from a scrapped vehicle, or was found to be defective or damaged during transport, storage, or maintenance, it must be deployed as follows:

  1. Use the inspection procedure described on this page to confirm that the special device operates correctly.

  2. Deploy the airbag in an upright position outdoors on a level surface, at least 10 feet away from other objects or people. The EFD (emergency safing device) and active hood actuator must be surrounded by at least 5 rubber bands.

  3. Connect a 12-volt battery to the device.

  4. Press the ignition switch. The airbag must deploy (the deployment is clearly audible and visible: a loud noise and rapid inflation of the airbag, followed by slow deflation).

  5. Dispose of the airbag as a whole. No part may be reused. Place it in a strong polyethylene bag and tie it tightly.

DISPOSAL OF A DAMAGED AIRBAG

  1. If installed in the vehicle, follow the procedure for removing the driver, front passenger, and side airbags.

  2. In all cases, short-circuit the two gas generator leads of the airbag by twisting them together.

  3. Package the airbag in exactly the same packaging as the new replacement part was supplied in.
