Description and Operation

Description

The driver airbag (DAB) is located in the steering wheel and is operated electrically. The clock spring is connected to the SRSCM.

It protects the driver in a frontal collision by inflating. The SRSCM determines when the driver airbag (DAB) is deployed.

repair procedures

TEST

airbag module

If a malfunctioning component is found during the next test, replace the airbag module with a new one.

  1. Check the steering wheel pad for deformation and cracks.

  2. Check the airbag module for dents, cracks and deformation.

  3. Check the connector terminals and their locking levers for damage, check that the wire harness is routed correctly and that there is no deformation.

  4. Check the inflator housing for deformation and cracks.

clock spring

  1. If at least one defective point is found during the following test, the clock spring must be replaced with a new part.

  2. Check the connectors and cable couplings for damage and check the terminals for deformation.

expansion

  1. Before installing the steering wheel, align the front wheels straight ahead.

  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least three minutes before starting work.

  3. Turn the steering wheel left and right to the marked positions. Press on parts A (3 red dashed circles) and remove the airbag module.

  4. Disconnect the airbag connector (A) and the horn connector (B).

  5. Remove the steering wheel.

(Refer to Steering System - Steering Column and Steering Shaft)

  6. Remove the steering column upper shroud (A).

  7. Loosen the screws and remove the lower panel (A).

8th.

Disconnect the clock spring wire connector (A) from the horn wire connector (B) on the clock spring.

  1. Remove the clock spring (A).

Installation

  1. Before installing the steering wheel, align the front wheels straight ahead.

  2. Connect the clock spring connector and the horn connector to the clock spring.

  3. The clock spring factory setting is neutral.

    1. The white wire is visible through the neutral position check window at the 10 o'clock position, indicating the spring is set to the neutral position.

    2. If the white wire is not visible through the neutral check window at the 10 o'clock position, set the neutral position manually.

Neutral Check Window: Normal Neutral check window: Malfunction

The white wire is visible through the neutral check window at the 10 o'clock position. The white wire is not visible through the neutral check window at the 10 o'clock position.
  4. How to manually set the clock spring to the neutral position.

    1. Press the automatic lock at the 6 o'clock position and turn it clockwise 3 turns.

    2. Press the automatic lock at the 6 o'clock position and turn it counterclockwise 3 turns.

    3. The white wire is visible through the neutral position check window at the 10 o'clock position, indicating the spring is set to the neutral position.

  5. Install the steering column cover and the steering wheel.

(Refer to Steering System - Steering Column and Steering Shaft)

  6. Connect the driver airbag (DAB) connector and the horn connector, then install the driver airbag (DAB) onto the steering wheel.

  7. Connect the negative (-) battery terminal.

8th.

After installing the airbag, check that the system operates correctly:

  • Turn the ignition on. The SRS indicator should light up for about 6 seconds during initialization, then turn off.

  • Check the operation of the horn switch.
