Description and Operation

Description

The Electrochromic Interior Rear View Mirror (ECM) is used to reduce glare reflected in the rear view mirror from the headlights of vehicles behind. A sensor in the mirror detects brightness. When the headlights of a following vehicle reflect in the mirror, the chemical layer in the mirror responds to the brightness and the reflectance changes from 10% to 70%. When reverse gear is engaged, the mirror becomes bright regardless of the surrounding conditions. The ECM receives signals via power, ground and reverse inputs and uses two sensors to measure glare intensity.

  1. The front sensor determines whether the surroundings are dark enough to activate the function.

  2. The rear sensor detects glare on the mirror. When glare is detected, the sensor sends a signal to darken the mirror.

  3. The ECM module darkens to the level determined by the rear sensor. When glare is no longer detected, the function is deactivated.

AUTOMATIC DIMMING FUNCTION

For better visibility when driving at night, the mirror automatically darkens when the driver may be dazzled by the headlights of vehicles behind. The automatic dimming function can be adjusted using the dimming ON/OFF button:

  1. If the control button is pressed for more than 3 seconds but less than 6 seconds, the automatic dimming function is turned off. This is indicated by the green status indicator LED turning off.

  2. When the control button is pressed again for more than 3 seconds but less than 6 seconds, the automatic dimming function is turned on. This is indicated by the LED turning off and the status indicator lighting green.

repair procedures

TEST

Perform the following procedure to check that the ECM operates normally.

  1. Turn the ignition on.

  2. Cover the front light sensor.

  3. Shine a flashlight on the rear sensor.

  4. The ECM starts the dimming process as soon as the sensor detects a certain brightness level.

  5. When reverse gear is engaged, the ECM display should not dim.

When light falls on both the front-facing and rear-facing sensors, the ECM should not darken.

expansion

  1. Remove the mirror cable cover (A).

  2. Disconnect the mirror connector (A).

  3. Pull the mirror (A) upward in the direction of the arrow.

Installation

  1. When installing the mirror, be careful not to damage the bracket.

  2. Connect the connectors, tighten the screw and install the mirror cover and rain sensor cover.
