Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS)
Description and Operation
Description
The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) detects the position of the crankshaft and is one of the most important sensors in the engine control system.
Without an input signal from the CKPS, fuel is not injected, so the vehicle cannot run without the CKPS signal.
This sensor is installed on the cylinder block or transmission housing and generates an alternating current by the magnetic flux field created by the sensor and the target wheel while the engine is running.
The target wheel has 58 slots and 2 missing slots over 360 degrees. CA (crank angle).

Repair Procedures
Inspection
The engine control system can be diagnosed more quickly for malfunctions using the Kia Diagnostic System (KDS). (Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code Guide)
KDS provides the following information.
Self-diagnosis: Checks and displays diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).
Data list: Checks the input/output values of the system.
Active test: Checks the operating condition of the system.
Additional functions: System option control, zero point adjustment, and other functions.
Component Inspection
Check the CKPS signal waveform using the KDS.
Specification: Refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Troubleshooting Manual.
Removal
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the engine room cover.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Engine Room Cover")
Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector (A).

Remove the crankshaft position sensor (A) after loosening the mounting bolt.
Tightening Torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

Installation
Install in the reverse order of removal.
