Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. The engine control system can be diagnosed more quickly for malfunctions using the Kia Diagnostic System (KDS). (Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code Guide)

    KDS provides the following information.

    1. Self-diagnosis: Checks and displays diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).

    2. Data list: Checks the input/output values of the system.

    3. Active test: Checks the operating condition of the system.

    4. Additional functions: System option control, zero point adjustment, and other functions.

Component Inspection

  1. ECM Ground Circuit Inspection: Measure the resistance between the ECM ground and the chassis ground, using the rear of the ECM harness connector as the checkpoint on the ECM side. If a problem is found, repair it.

    Specification: Below 1 Ω

  2. ECM Connector Inspection: Disconnect the ECM connector and visually inspect the ground terminals on the ECM side and the harness side for bent pins or poor contact pressure. If a problem is found, repair it.

  3. If no problem is found in Steps 1 and 2, the ECM may be faulty. Before replacing the ECM with a new one, make sure there are no DTCs, then re-check the vehicle. If DTCs are present, troubleshoot them first before replacing the ECM.

  4. Retest the Original ECM: Install the original ECM (which may be faulty) in a known-good vehicle and check the vehicle. If the problem recurs, replace the original ECM with a new one. If the problem does not occur, it is an intermittent problem.

Removal

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Perform the oil pressure characteristic backup procedure using KDS when replacing with a new ECM.

  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")

  4. Disconnect the ECM connector (A).

  5. Remove the TCM (A) by pulling it in the direction indicated by the arrow.

  6. Remove the bracket (A) by loosening the bolts.

    Tightening Torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

  2. Perform the ECM reset and learning procedure using KDS after replacement.

(Engine Control Module (ECM) - Adjustment)

Adjustment

  1. Perform the neutral mode using KDS when replacing with a reused ECM.

    [Without Smart Key]

    [Smart Key]

  2. Perform the Key Teaching procedure using KDS.

    [Without Smart Key]

    [Smart Key]

Turn the ignition on, then off, using the smart key or start button. The ECM will then automatically receive the smart key information.

  3. Perform the VIN registration procedure using KDS.

  4. Perform the oil pressure characteristics input procedure using the KDS.

  5. Perform the ETC module learning procedure.

(Refer to Electronic Throttle Control System - "Adjustment")

  6. Perform the TCM learning procedure.

(Refer to "Automatic Transmission Control System - Adjustment")
