Description and Operation

Description

  • The Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S), consisting of zirconia and alumina, is installed both before and after the Manifold Catalytic Converter (MCC) to detect the air-fuel ratio and send it to the ECM.

  • For proper operation of this sensor, the temperature of the sensor tip must be above 370 °C.

For this reason, a heater controlled by the ECM operating signal is built into the sensor.

When the exhaust gas temperature is below the specified value, the heater warms the sensor tip.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. The engine control system can be diagnosed more quickly for malfunctions using the Kia Diagnostic System (KDS). (Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code Guide)

    KDS provides the following information.

    1. Self-diagnosis: Checks and displays diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).

    2. Data list: Checks the input/output values of the system.

    3. Active test: Checks the operating condition of the system.

    4. Additional functions: System option control, zero point adjustment, and other functions.

Component Inspection

  1. Check the HO2S signal waveform using the KDS.

Specification: Refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Troubleshooting Manual.

Removal

[Front Heated Oxygen Sensor]

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Disconnect the connector (A).

  3. Remove the heated oxygen sensor (B) using the SST (09392-1Y100).

    Tightening torque: 39.2 - 49 N·m

[Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor]

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector (A).

  3. Remove the heated oxygen sensor (B) using the SST (09392-1Y100).

    Tightening torque: 39.2 - 49 N·m

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

  2. Reset the ECM adaptive value after replacing the heated oxygen sensor.
