Description and Operation

Description

  • The Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) system advances or retards the intake and exhaust valve timing according to the ECM control signal, which is calculated based on engine speed and load.

  • CVVT control provides valve overlap or underlap, which results in better fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions (NOx, HC) and improved engine performance by reducing pumping losses, internal EGR effect, improving combustion stability, improving volumetric efficiency and increasing expansion work.

  • This system consists of the following:

  • The CVVT Oil Control Valve (OCV) supplies engine oil to the cam phaser or shuts off engine oil from the cam phaser according to the ECM PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control signal.

  • CVVT oil temperature sensor (OTS), which measures the engine oil temperature.

  • The Cam Phaser changes the cam phase using hydraulic pressure from the engine oil.

  • Engine oil supplied from the CVVT oil control valve changes the cam phase in the direction of engine rotation (Intake Advance / Exhaust Retard) or in the opposite direction (Intake Retard / Exhaust Advance) by rotating the rotor connected to the camshaft inside the cam phaser.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. The engine control system can be diagnosed more quickly for malfunctions using the Kia Diagnostic System (KDS). (Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code Guide)

    KDS provides the following information.

    1. Self-diagnosis: Checks and displays diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).

    2. Data list: Checks the input/output values of the system.

    3. Active test: Checks the operating condition of the system.

    4. Additional functions: System option control, zero point adjustment, and other functions.

Component Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Disconnect the OCV connector.

  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the OCV.

  4. Make sure the resistance is within specification.

    Specification: 9.4–10.4 [20 °C]

Removal

[Intake]

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Disconnect the CVVT oil control valve connector (A).

  3. Remove the CVVT oil control valve after loosening the mounting bolt (B).

    Tightening Torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

[Exhaust]

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Disconnect the CVVT oil control valve connector (A).

  3. Remove the CVVT oil control valve after loosening the mounting bolt (B).

    Tightening Torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.
