Description and Operation
Description
Knock is a condition characterized by undesirable vibration and noise and may cause engine damage.
The Knock Sensor (KS) is installed on the cylinder block and detects engine knock.
When knock occurs, vibration from the cylinder block is applied as pressure to the piezoelectric element.
At this time, this sensor sends a voltage signal higher than the specified value to the ECM, and the ECM retards the ignition timing.
If the knock disappears after advancing the ignition timing, the ECM advances the ignition timing.
This sequential control can improve engine power, torque and fuel economy.

Repair Procedures
Inspection
The engine control system can be diagnosed more quickly for malfunctions using the Kia Diagnostic System (KDS). (Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code Guide)
KDS provides the following information.
Self-diagnosis: Checks and displays diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).
Data list: Checks the input/output values of the system.
Active test: Checks the operating condition of the system.
Additional functions: System option control, zero point adjustment, and other functions.
Component Inspection
Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the knock sensor connector.
Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the knock sensor.
Make sure the resistance is within specification.
Specification: Approx. 4.87 MΩ [20 °C]
Removal
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the intake manifold.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Intake Manifold")
Remove the knock sensor (A) after loosening the mounting bolt.
Knock Sensor Mounting Bolt:
18,6–24 N·m

Installation
Install in the reverse order of removal.
