Description and Operation
Description
The Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system consists of the throttle body with an integrated control motor and the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).
Instead of a conventional throttle cable, an Accelerator Position Sensor (APS) is installed. The APS is used to detect the driver's input.
The ECM uses the APS signal to calculate the target throttle angle; the throttle position is then controlled by the ECM through the ETC motor control.
The TPS signal is used to provide feedback on the throttle position to the ECM.
The ETC allows precise control of the throttle position; separate cruise control modules and cables are not required.

Repair Procedures
Inspection
The engine control system can be diagnosed more quickly for malfunctions using the Kia Diagnostic System (KDS). (Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code Guide)
KDS provides the following information.
Self-diagnosis: Checks and displays diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).
Data list: Checks the input/output values of the system.
Active test: Checks the operating condition of the system.
Additional functions: System option control, zero point adjustment, and other functions.
Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
Connect the KDS to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
Start the engine and measure the output voltage of TPS 1 and 2 at TP and VOT.
Throttle Angle (°) Output Voltage (V) [Vref = 5.0 V] TP1 TP2 0 0,5 4,5 10 0,96 4.05 20 1,41 3,59 30 1,87 3.14 40 2,32 2,68 50 2,78 2,23 60 3,23 1,77 70 3,69 1,32 80 4.14 0,86 90 4.6 0,41 98 4,65 0,35 THA (0) 0,5 4,5 THW (86) 4.41 0,59
ETC Motor
Disconnect the ETC module connector.
Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the ETC module.
Specification: 0.3–100 Ω (20 °C)
Removal
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the air cleaner.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
Disconnect the connector (A), then remove the ETC module by loosening the bolts (B).
Tightening torque: 7.8–11.8 N·m

Disconnect the coolant hoses (A) from the ETC module (B).

Installation
Install in the reverse order of removal.
Refill the engine coolant.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - Engine Coolant)
Reset the ECM adaptive values after replacing the ETC.

Perform the ETC learning procedure.
(Refer to Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) System - "Adjustment")
Adjustment
Wait 1 minute with the ignition switched ON.
Start the engine and maintain idle speed for 15 minutes.
Wait for 1 minute with the ignition switched off.
Restart the engine and check that the idle speed is stable.
Cleaning
Remove the ETC.
(Refer to ETC - "Removal")
Remove the deposits from the throttle body using a soft cloth moistened with cleaning solution.

Install the ETC.
(Refer to ETC - "Installation")
Reset the ETC adaptive value.

Perform the ETC learning procedure.
(Refer to ETC - "Adjustment")
