Electric Power Steering (EPS) (if equipped)

~2min read

This system uses an electric motor to assist steering.

If the engine is off or if the power steering system stops working, the vehicle can still be steered, but more effort will be required.

The motor-driven power steering system is controlled by the steering assist torque and vehicle speed to control the motor.

To provide better steering control, the steering becomes heavier as vehicle speed increases, and lighter as speed decreases. If you notice any change in the steering effort required during normal vehicle operation, the power steering must be checked by an authorized Kia dealer.

NOTE The following may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • The EPS warning light does not come on.
  • After turning the ignition ON, the steering wheel turns heavily. This occurs while the EPS system is performing self-diagnosis.

After diagnosis is complete, normal steering will be restored.

  • A clicking sound from the EPS relay can be heard when the ignition switch is turned to ON or LOCK.
  • Engine noise may be heard when the vehicle is stationary or moving at low speed.
  • If the Electric Power Steering system is not functioning properly, the warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster. Steering wheel rotation and operation will be difficult. Have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.
  • The effort required to keep turning the steering wheel increases when the vehicle is stationary.
  • However, after a few minutes, it will return to normal.

  • When you move the steering wheel at low temperatures, a strange sound may be heard. If the temperature rises, the sound will stop. This is normal.
  • When the battery charging warning light is on or voltage is low (when the alternator (or battery) is not functioning normally or has a malfunction), the steering wheel may turn heavily, and it may be difficult to steer the vehicle with an abnormally functioning steering system.
