Emergency towing

If towing is necessary, it is recommended that an authorized Kia Motors dealer or a commercial roadside assistance company perform it.

If roadside assistance is unavailable in an emergency, the vehicle may be temporarily towed using a cable or chain attached to the emergency towing hook located at the front (or rear) under the vehicle (if equipped). Take special care while towing. A driver must be in the vehicle to steer and operate the brakes.

Towing in this manner is permitted only for short distances, on paved roads, at low speed. For this purpose, the wheels, axles, drivetrain, steering system and brakes must all be in good condition.

  • Do not use the towing hooks to pull the vehicle out of mud, sand or other substances from which the vehicle cannot get out under its own power.
  • Avoid towing a vehicle that is heavier than the towing vehicle.
  • The drivers of both vehicles should remain in frequent contact.
CAUTION
  • Attach the towing cable to the towing hook.
  • Using any part of the vehicle other than the towing hooks for towing may damage the vehicle body.
  • Use only a cable or chain specifically designed for towing vehicles.

Securely attach the cable or chain to the towing hook.

  • Before starting emergency towing, make sure that the hook is not broken or damaged.
  • Securely attach the towing cable or chain to the hook.
  • Do not jerk the hook. Apply a steady and even force.
  • To avoid damaging the hook, do not apply force to it from the side or vertically. Towing should always be done in a straight line.
WARNING Take special care when towing the vehicle.
  • Avoid sudden starts or variable maneuvers while driving, which would place excessive load on the emergency towing hook and the towing cable or chain. The hook and the towing cable or chain could break and cause injury or damage.
  • If the vehicle is not drivable and cannot be moved, do not continue towing by force. Contact an authorized Kia Motors dealer or a commercial roadside assistance service.
  • Tow the vehicle as straight ahead as possible.
  • Keep well clear of the vehicle while towing.

  • The tow rope should be shorter than 5 m (16 ft). For visibility, attach a white or red flag (approx. 30 cm (12 in) wide) to the middle of the tow rope.
  • Drive carefully so the tow rope does not slacken during towing.

Emergency towing precautions

  • Place the ignition switch in the ACC position so the steering wheel is not locked.
  • Place the gear selector lever in N (Neutral).
  • Release the parking brake.
  • Press the brake pedal harder than usual, as braking effectiveness is reduced.
  • Because power steering is off, more effort will be required to steer the vehicle.
  • If the vehicle is descending a long slope, the brakes may overheat and their effectiveness may be reduced.
Stop frequently to allow the brakes to cool. CAUTION - Automatic transmission
  • If the vehicle is towed with all wheels in contact with the road, it may only be towed forward. Make sure the automatic transmission selector lever is in the N (Neutral) position. Make sure the steering is unlocked by setting the ignition key to the ACC position.

The driver must be in the vehicle to operate the brake pedal and steering wheel.

  • To avoid serious damage to the automatic transmission, limit the vehicle speed to 15 km/h (10 mph) and do not tow for more than 1.5 km (1 mile).
  • Before starting to tow, check the automatic transmission fluid level. If it is below the "HOT" mark on the dipstick, add fluid.

If fluid cannot be added, use a towing service.
