Engine overheating
If the temperature gauge indicates overheating, a loss of power may be felt or a loud knocking or pinging may be heard. This means the engine has probably overheated.
If this happens, do the following:
- Drive off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
- Shift the gear selector to P (automatic transmission) or to neutral (manual transmission) and apply the parking brake. If the air conditioner is on, turn it off.
- If coolant is leaking under the vehicle or steam is coming from under the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until the coolant leak stops or the steam stops coming out. If you cannot see any coolant leak or steam, leave the engine running and check whether the engine cooling fan is working.
If the fan is not running, stop the engine.
If the belt condition is satisfactory, check for coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses or underneath the vehicle. (If the air conditioner was used, water dripping from it after the vehicle has stopped is normal.) WARNING To prevent injury while the engine is running, keep hair, hands and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan and drive belts.
- If the water pump drive belt is damaged or engine coolant is leaking, stop the engine immediately and contact the nearest authorized Kia Motors dealer for assistance.
- If the cause of the overheating cannot be found, wait until the engine temperature returns to normal.
Then, if coolant has been lost, carefully add coolant to the reservoir until the level reaches the mark in the middle.
