Using the Mechanical Key

~7min read

The hazard warning flashers and horn in the Lexus GS (L10) are key safety features of the vehicle. The horn is conveniently located on the steering wheel and allows quick signaling in an emergency. The hazard warning flashers provide additional safety during breakdowns or hazardous situations. This section explains how they work, when they can be used, and the legal requirements for their use. With these features, the Lexus GS remains a reliable partner even in exceptional situations.

To remove the mechanical key, press the release button and pull out the key.

Verwenden des mechanischen Schlüssels

The mechanical key can only be inserted in one direction because it has grooves on one side only. If the key cannot be inserted into the lock cylinder, turn it over and try again.

After use, reinsert the mechanical key into the electronic key. Carry the mechanical key together with the electronic key.

If the battery of the electronic key is flat or the smart entry function is not working properly, you will need the mechanical key.

Card key (if equipped)

  • The card key is not waterproof.
  • The mechanical key stored in the card key should only be used if there is a problem, for example if the card key does not work properly.
  • If the mechanical key is difficult to remove, press the release button with the tip of a ballpoint pen or similar. If you have difficulty pulling it out, use a coin or similar to help.

    Using the Mechanical Key

  • When inserting the mechanical key into the card key, keep the release button pressed.
  • If the battery cover is not installed and the battery falls out, or if the battery was removed because the key got wet, reinstall the battery with the positive (+) terminal facing the Lexus emblem.

If you must hand over the vehicle key to a parking attendant

Turn off the glove box and trunk opener main switch and lock the glove box and armrest lid if necessary. Remove the mechanical key for your own use and give only the electronic key to the parking attendant.

If you lose your mechanical keys

New genuine mechanical keys can be made at any Lexus dealer or authorized service center, or another qualified and properly equipped specialist workshop, using the other mechanical key and the key number stamped on your key number plate. Do not keep the number plate in the vehicle; store it in a safe place, such as your wallet.

On board an aircraft

If you carry an electronic key on board an aircraft, make sure that no buttons on the electronic key are pressed while you are in the aircraft cabin. If you carry an electronic key in your pocket or bag, make sure the buttons cannot be pressed accidentally.

Pressing a button causes the electronic key to transmit radio waves, which could interfere with the aircraft's operation.

Electronic key battery discharge

  • The normal battery life is 1 to 2 years. (The card key battery life is approximately 1.5 years.)
  • When the battery is weak, an alarm sounds inside the vehicle when the engine is turned off.
  • Because the electronic key constantly receives radio waves, the battery discharges even when the electronic key is not used. The following symptoms indicate that the battery of the electronic key may be flat. Replace the battery if necessary.
The smart access and start system or the remote control does not work. The detection range becomes smaller. The LED indicator on the key does not light up.
  • To avoid excessive discharge, do not leave the electronic key within 1 m (3 ft.) of the following electrical devices that generate a magnetic field:
Televisions, computers, mobile phones, cordless phones and battery chargers; charging mobile phones or cordless phones; desk lamps; induction cooktops

Replacing the battery

Checking the number of registered keys

You can have the number of keys already registered to the vehicle checked.

For more information, contact any Lexus dealer or authorized service center, or another qualified and properly equipped specialist workshop.

If a wrong key is used

The lock cylinder turns freely without engaging the internal mechanism.

NOTE

How to prevent damage to the keys

  • Do not drop the keys, protect them from strong impacts, and do not bend them.
  • Do not expose the keys to high temperatures for extended periods.
  • Do not let the keys get wet, and do not clean them in an ultrasonic cleaner or similar.
  • Do not attach metallic or magnetic materials to the keys, and do not store them near such materials.
  • Do not disassemble the keys.
  • Do not attach stickers or other items to the surface of the electronic keys.
  • Keep the keys away from objects that generate magnetic fields, such as televisions, audio systems and induction cooktops.
  • Keep the keys away from electrical medical devices such as low-frequency or microwave therapy devices, and do not receive medical treatment with these devices while carrying the keys.

When carrying the electronic key

Keep the electronic key at least 10 cm (4 in.) away from electronic devices that are switched on. Radio waves from electronic devices within 10 cm (4 in.) may interfere with the proper operation of the electronic key.

If the smart entry and start system malfunctions or other key problems occur

Take your vehicle, together with all electronic keys supplied with the vehicle including the card key, to any Lexus dealer or authorized service center, or another qualified and properly equipped specialist workshop.

If an electronic key is lost

If you lose an electronic key, the risk of vehicle theft increases significantly. Contact a Lexus dealer or authorized repairer, or another qualified workshop with the appropriate equipment, immediately. Take all other electronic keys supplied with your vehicle, including the card key, with you.

NOTE

Handling the Card Key (If Equipped)

  • Do not apply excessive force when inserting the mechanical key into the card key. Otherwise, the card key may be damaged.
  • If the battery or the terminals of the card key get wet, the battery may corrode. If the key has fallen into water or come into contact with drinking water or similar liquids, remove the battery cover immediately and wipe the battery and terminals dry. (Pull the battery cover gently to remove it.) Have a corroded battery replaced by a Lexus dealer or authorized repairer, or another qualified workshop with the appropriate equipment.
  • Do not break the battery cover and do not use a screwdriver to remove it. Forcibly removing the battery cover may bend or damage the key.
  • Frequent removal of the battery cover may cause it to loosen.
  • Check the battery orientation when installing the battery. Installing the battery in the wrong orientation may cause the battery to discharge quickly.
  • The surface of the card key may be damaged or its coating may peel off in the following situations:
Do not store the card key together with other hard objects such as coins or keys. Do not scratch the card key with a sharp object such as the tip of a mechanical pencil. Do not wipe the surface of the card key with thinner or white spirit.
