Stop and start function
This system reduces fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
When the vehicle starts, the system is activated automatically.
While driving, the system stops the engine (standby mode) when the vehicle comes to a stop (traffic jam, traffic light, etc.).
With the engine in standby, the brake assistance is no longer operational.
Do not drive the vehicle while the engine is in standby (the
indicator
is displayed on the instrument panel).
System operating conditions
The engine goes into standby mode if:
For vehicles with a manual gearbox:
- the vehicle has moved since its last stop;
- the gearbox is in neutral;
- The clutch pedal is released; and
- the vehicle speed is below 3 km/h.
The warning light
appears on the instrument panel
and warns you that the engine is going into standby mode.
The vehicle's equipment remains operational while the engine is stopped.
The engine restarts as soon as you press the clutch pedal to select a gear.
If you leave the vehicle, an audible signal with the "switch off ignition" message warns you that the engine is in standby and not switched off.
For vehicles with an automatic gearbox:
- the vehicle has moved since its last stop;
- the brake pedal is pressed (firmly enough);
- The accelerator pedal is not pressed;
- And the vehicle speed is zero for approximately 2 seconds
The warning light
appears on the instrument panel
and warns you that the engine is going into standby mode.
The vehicle's equipment remains operational while the engine is stopped.
Selector lever in D: the engine restarts as soon as you release the brake pedal or press the accelerator pedal.
Before leaving the vehicle, you must switch off the ignition by pressing the engine stop button (refer to the "starting and stopping the engine" section).
Specific feature of automatic engine restart
Under certain conditions, the engine may restart without any action on your part to ensure your safety and comfort.
This can happen in particular when:
- the outside temperature is too low or too high (below approximately 0°C or above approximately 30°C);
- the "see clearly" function is activated (refer to the "air conditioning" section in chapter 3);
- the battery is not sufficiently charged;
- The vehicle speed is above 5 km/h;
- Repeated pressing of the brake pedal or the braking system is required;
- ..
With the engine in standby, the brake assistance is no longer operational.
Conditions preventing engine stop
Depending on the vehicle, certain conditions prevent the system from stopping the engine, in particular:
- Reverse gear is engaged;
- the engine hood is not locked;
- the driver's door is not closed;
- the driver's seat belt is not fastened;
- The outside temperature is too low or too high (below approximately 0°C or above approximately 30°C);
- the battery is not sufficiently charged;
- the difference between the interior temperature of the vehicle and the automatic air conditioning set point is too great;
- the "see clearly" function is activated (refer to the "air conditioning" section in chapter 3);
- The engine coolant temperature is insufficient;
- Automatic particulate filter cleaning is in progress;
Or
- ...
Depending on the vehicle, the "AUTO STOP UNAVAILABLE" message or the indicator
on the instrument panel warns you that engine standby mode is unavailable.
For refuelling, the engine must be stopped (not placed in standby): you must switch off the engine by pressing the engine stop button (refer to the "starting and stopping the engine" section).
Special cases
- Depending on the vehicle, with the system active and the engine stopped (traffic jam, traffic light, etc.), if the driver gets out of the seat, or unfastens the seat belt and opens the driver's door, the ignition switches off.
To restart and reactivate the Stop and Start system, press the start button (refer to the "starting and stopping the engine" section).
- In the event of engine stall, if the system is active, fully depress the clutch pedal to restart.
In an emergency stop, the engine can restart by pressing the clutch pedal if the Stop and Start function is activated.
Deactivating and activating the function

Press switch 1 to deactivate the function. The "stop and start deactivated" message appears on the instrument panel and the indicator built into switch 2 lights up.
Pressing it again reactivates the system. The "stop and start activated" message appears on the instrument panel and the indicator built into switch 1 turns off.
The system reactivates automatically each time the vehicle is started by pressing the start button (refer to the "starting and stopping the engine" section).
Special case: with the engine in standby, pressing switch 1 restarts the engine automatically.
Operating faults
When the message "stop and start to be checked" appears on the instrument panel, together with the built-in indicator 2 on switch 1 lighting up, the system is deactivated.
Consult an authorised dealer.
Before leaving the vehicle, you must switch off the ignition by pressing the engine stop button (refer to the "starting and stopping the engine" section).
