Pickup Coil

Distributor Pickup Coil Resistance Check
1. Terminal location on vehicles with built-in electronic ignition module (Toyota and GEO, respectively)
2. Terminal location on vehicles with external-mounted electronic ignition module (Toyota and GEO, respectively)
3. Terminal location on vehicles with built-in electronic ignition module (Toyota and GEO, respectively)
4. Terminal location on vehicles with external-mounted electronic ignition module (Toyota and GEO, respectively)
Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the connector from the distributor and measure the resistance between the terminals of the pickup coil (see illustration Distributor Pickup Coil Resistance Check).
2. Compare the measured values with the specifications in the "Specifications" section. If the measured resistance differs from the specified values, replace the pickup coil.
Checking Air Gap Between Pickup Coil and Rotor
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the distributor (refer to subsection 3.3.6).

3. Using a brass feeler gauge, measure the gap between the rotor and the pickup coil projection. Compare the result with the specification. If the gap differs from the specification, replace the distributor, as the gap is not adjustable. An increased gap is usually caused by wear of the distributor shaft bearing.
Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the distributor (refer to subsection 3.3.6).
3. Remove the ignition coil (refer to subsection 3.3.5).

4. Remove the pickup coil mounting screws.

5. Remove the pickup coil from the distributor.

6. Remove the condenser and replace it.
7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
