Removable key blade - Unlocking the door. Private locking*
The removable key blade in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) serves as a manual emergency unlock if the central locking fails. This section explains how to use it to open the door and the specifics of private locking. Particular attention is given to safely handing over the key when using a valet parking service or for maintenance. Tips on correctly activating and deactivating private locking provide additional protection for the vehicle interior.
Removable key blade - Unlocking the door
The removable key blade can be used if the central locking cannot be activated with the transponder key, e.g. if the key battery is flat.
If the central locking cannot be activated with the transponder key, e.g. because the batteries are depleted, the driver's door can be opened as follows:
- Unlock the driver's door with the key blade in the lock cylinder of the door handle.
For illustrations and further information, see Keyless Drive* - Unlocking with the key blade
- Deactivate the alarm system. To do this, insert the transponder key into the ignition lock.
If the door was unlocked with the key blade and is opened, the alarm system is triggered.
For vehicles with the keyless system, see Keyless Drive* - Unlocking with the key blade.

Private locking*
Private locking is intended for situations where the vehicle is handed over for maintenance, to a hotel valet service or similar. The glove compartment is locked and the luggage compartment lid lock is separated from the central locking - the luggage compartment lid can be opened neither with the central locking button in the front doors nor with the transponder key.

Locking points for transponder key without key blade and with private locking activated.
This means that the transponder key without key blade can only be used to arm/disarm the alarm system, open the doors and drive the vehicle.
The transponder key without key blade can then be handed over to maintenance or hotel staff - the vehicle owner keeps the loose key blade.
Activate/deactivate

Activating private locking.
To activate private locking:
Insert the key blade into the lock cylinder of the glove compartment.
Turn the key blade 180 degrees clockwise.
Pull out the key blade. At the same time, a message is shown in the information display of the instrument cluster.
The glove compartment is now locked and the luggage compartment lid can no longer be unlocked with the transponder key or the central locking button.
CAUTIONDo not reattach the key blade to the transponder key. Store it in a safe place.
- To deactivate, follow the same steps in reverse order.
For information on locking the glove compartment separately, see Locking/Unlocking - Glove Compartment.
The removable key blade of the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) lets you unlock the driver's door manually and activate Secret locking. This keeps the vehicle securely locked even when the battery is flat or when it is left with a hotel or workshop.
Secret locking protects the luggage compartment and the glove compartment from unauthorized access. The Volvo S80 thus offers an additional level of security and flexibility.
