Transponder Key - Personalization*
The transponder key of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) allows personal settings such as seating position, mirrors, and instrument cluster display to be stored. This section describes how these functions are activated, stored, and reset when required. Special notes cover the risk of pinching when adjusting the seats, as well as adjusting the settings when several drivers with different keys use the vehicle. This makes driving more comfortable for each individual.
The key memory in the transponder key allows certain settings in the vehicle to be personalized.
The key memory function is available in combination with the power-adjustable* driver's seat.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the settings for the exterior mirrors, driver's seat, steering effort, and for the theme, contrast, and color mode of the instrument cluster can be stored.
The function1 can be activated/deactivated in the MY CAR menu system. For more information on the menu system, see MY CAR.
When the function is activated, the settings are automatically assigned to the key memory. This means that a changed setting is automatically stored in the memory of the respective transponder key.
Saving settings
Check that the key memory function is activated in the MY CAR menu system.
Proceed as follows to store the settings and use the memory in the transponder key:
- Unlock the vehicle with the transponder key whose memory is to store setting2.
- Make the desired settings, e.g. for the seat and the exterior mirrors.
- The settings are stored in the memory of the respective transponder key.
The next time the vehicle is unlocked with the same transponder key, the settings stored in the key memory are automatically applied, provided they have been changed since the transponder key was last used.
Emergency stop: If the seat moves unintentionally, press any of the seat adjustment buttons or memory buttons to stop it.
To return to the seat position stored in the key memory, press the unlock button on the transponder key. The driver's door must be open.
WARNINGRisk of crushing! Make sure children do not play with the controls. Before adjusting, make sure there are no objects in front of, behind or under the seat.
Make sure no occupants in the rear seat can become trapped.
Changing settings
If several people approach the vehicle, each with a transponder key, the settings for, e.g., the seat and outside mirrors are taken from the key used to unlock the driver's door.
After the driver's door has been opened by person A with transponder key A, but person B is to drive, the settings can be changed in the following ways:
- Standing at the driver's door or sitting at the steering wheel, person B presses the unlock button on their transponder key, see Transponder key - functions.
- Use seat button 1-3 to select one of the three possible seat setting memories, see Front seats - power-operated*.
- Adjust the seat and outside mirrors manually, see Front seats - power-operated* and Rear view mirrors - exterior.
1 Referred to as the key memory in MY CAR.
2 This setting does not affect the settings stored with the power seat memory function.
Reset settings
If the vehicle is locked or left unlocked for 30 minutes, the key memory is deactivated and a standard driver profile is set. To reactivate the key memory of the current transponder key, proceed as follows.
Vehicles without Keyless Drive
The settings stored in the key memory are activated when the vehicle is unlocked by pressing the unlock button on the transponder key.
Vehicles with Keyless Drive
The key memory is activated when the following conditions are met:
- The vehicle is unlocked either by pressing the unlock button on the transponder key or keylessly.
- If the vehicle is unlocked, the key is scanned when the driver's door is opened. If the transponder key is clearly identified, the settings stored in that key are activated. If the vehicle is locked, see the previous point.

Thanks to the intelligent memory function, the vehicle recognizes the key and automatically adjusts the stored settings, which is ideal when drivers change or the vehicle is shared.
The Volvo S80 thus offers a high level of comfort and personalization in everyday use.
