The safety locking of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) mechanically disables the door handles and lock buttons to prevent unauthorized opening. This section explains how to activate and deactivate the function and the meaning of the delay when locking. Warnings on use when people are inside the vehicle are also included. Tips on the child safety lock, both manual and electronic, complete the topic.

Safety locking*

With safety locking, all lock buttons and door handles are mechanically disabled, so the doors cannot be opened either from inside or from outside.

Safety locking is activated with the transponder key approx. ten seconds after the doors have been locked.

CAUTION

Opening a door during the delay period interrupts the sequence and deactivates the alarm system.

The vehicle can only be unlocked with the transponder key when safety locking is activated. The front left door can also be unlocked with the removable key blade. On vehicles with Keyless drive*, doors and the trunk lid can also be unlocked or opened by touching the handles on the doors or trunk lid.

WARNING

Never leave anyone in the vehicle without first deactivating the safety locking function. This prevents anyone from being locked in.

Temporary deactivation

Aktive Menüoptionen werden mit einem Kreuz angezeigt.
Active menu options are indicated with a cross.

  1. MY CAR
  2. OK MENU
  3. TUNE knob
  4. EXIT

If the doors must be locked from outside while someone is inside the vehicle, the safety locking function can be temporarily switched off as follows. This is done in the MY CAR menu system. For more on the menu system, see MY CAR.

CAUTION
  • Remember that the alarm is activated when the vehicle is locked.
  • Opening any door from inside triggers the alarm system.

The above applies unless safety locking has been temporarily deactivated.

Alarm system

The alarm system is an electronic arrangement that sounds an alarm, for example, in the event of a break-in to the vehicle.

The activated alarm system is triggered in the following situations:

  • A door, the hood or the trunk lid is opened
  • Movement is detected in the vehicle interior (if a motion sensor* is installed)
  • The vehicle is lifted or towed (if it is equipped with a tilt sensor*)
  • the cable of the starter battery is disconnected
  • The siren is disconnected.

A message appears in the information display in the instrument cluster if a fault occurs in the alarm system. In this case, contact a workshop - a Volvo authorized workshop is recommended.

CAUTION

The motion sensors trigger the alarm system when movement is detected in the vehicle interior - even air currents are registered. The alarm system may therefore be triggered if the vehicle is left with a window or sunroof open, or if an interior heater is used.

To prevent this: close the windows/sunroof when leaving the vehicle. When using the built-in (or a portable electric) interior heater of the vehicle, adjust the heater nozzles so that air is not blown upward. Alternatively, a lower alarm level can be used, see Reduced alarm level.

CAUTION

Do not attempt to repair or modify alarm system components yourself.

Such attempts may affect your insurance terms.

Activating the alarm system

- Press the lock button on the transponder key.

Deactivating the alarm system

- Press the unlock button on the transponder key.

Switching off the triggered alarm

- Press the unlock button on the transponder key or insert the transponder key into the ignition lock.

The safety locking and child safety lock in the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) increase protection for all occupants. With a few simple steps, the doors can be secured mechanically or electronically so that children cannot open them from the inside.

The alarm system is also designed to protect the vehicle flexibly and reliably against unauthorized access. Simple operation via the key or the menu system makes it especially convenient to use.

Volvo thus remains true to its commitment to combining the highest safety standards with ease of use.
