Global monitoring system
Introduction

Fig. 15 Display: global monitoring system
This system monitors certain functions and the operating status of various vehicle components. Monitoring takes place when the ignition is switched on and also while driving.
Malfunctions or urgent maintenance and repair requirements are shown in the instrument cluster display and announced by audible signals. Depending on their priority, malfunctions are displayed with red or yellow symbols.
Red symbols indicate a danger, yellow symbols indicate a warning.
In some cases, information for the driver may be displayed in addition to red symbols.
Driver information display
Driver information is displayed in addition to the indicator lights and symbols in the instrument cluster display.
Driver information appears in the display when the bulb failure indicator lights up to signal a bulb failure, when you drive with the parking brake applied and, on vehicles with automatic transmission, before selecting a gear.
In addition, you can have driver information displayed when a priority 1 symbol flashes in the display.
Driver information display
For example, the engine oil pressure symbol
not OK appears in the display.
If you now press the CHECK button, the following message appears:
Stop the engine, check the oil level
The driver information display disappears after approximately 5 seconds. You can call it up again by pressing the CHECK button.
Note
The driver information Parking brake applied and Apply foot brake to engage a gear when stationary cannot be redisplayed. This driver information remains in the display until you release the parking brake or engage a gear.
Parking brake applied warning
- Release the parking brake.
If you inadvertently drive with the parking brake applied, a buzzer sounds (warning signal) and the following message appears in the display:
Parking brake applied
The parking brake warning also activates if you drive for more than 3 seconds at a speed above 5 km/h.
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission
Operation check: manual transmission
When you switch on the ignition, an operation check is performed automatically. If no malfunctions are detected in the monitored functions, the message OK appears for a few seconds => fig. 15.
If malfunctions are detected, they are displayed in place of the message OK. A warning signal sounds at the same time.
Applies to vehicles: with automatic transmission
Operation check: automatic transmission
When you switch on the ignition, an operation check is performed automatically. If the selector lever is in position P or N, the following message appears first:
To engage a gear when stationary, depress the brake pedal.
When a selector position (R, D, etc.) is chosen, the message disappears and the operation check takes over. If no malfunctions
are detected in the monitored functions, the message OK appears for a few seconds => fig. 15.
If malfunctions are detected, the message mentioned above disappears approximately 15 seconds after starting the engine and is replaced by the malfunction message. A warning signal sounds at the same time.
If neither the message OK nor a malfunction message is displayed, have the global monitoring system checked.
Red warning symbols
A red symbol warns you of a danger.

Fig. 16 Display: coolant level warning
- Stop the vehicle.
- Switch off the engine.
- Check the malfunctioning function. Consult a specialist if necessary.

Red symbols indicate a priority 1 malfunction (danger).
When a red symbol appears, three successive warning tones sound. The symbol flashes until the malfunction is rectified. If several priority 1 malfunctions occur, the corresponding symbols appear one after the other for approximately 2 seconds each.
Brake system malfunction
A brake system malfunction must be rectified as soon as possible.
If the symbol
flashes in the display,
this means that a brake system malfunction has been detected.
In addition to this symbol, one of the following two messages for the driver appears in the display:
Stop the vehicle. Check the brake fluid and the hydraulic fluid.
Warning! Brake problem (ABS): go to a workshop
- Stop the vehicle.
- Check the brake fluid level.
If the ABS fails, the ABS warning light
comes on together with the brake system malfunction symbol
CAUTION!
Observe the warnings => page 249, "Work in the engine compartment" before opening the hood to check the brake fluid level.
If the brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low - risk of accident! Do not continue driving. Consult a specialist.
If the brake system warning light comes on at the same time as the ABS warning light, the ABS control function may be impaired. In braking, the rear wheels may then lock relatively quickly. In some cases this can cause the rear of the vehicle to break away - risk of skidding! Drive carefully to the nearest specialist workshop and have the fault rectified.
Cooling system malfunction
A cooling system malfunction must be rectified immediately.
If the symbol
flashes in the instrument cluster display,
this means that the coolant temperature is too high or the coolant level is too low. In addition to this symbol, the following message for the driver appears in the display:
Stop the engine. Check the coolant level.
- Stop the vehicle.
- Switch off the engine.
- Check the coolant level.
- Top up coolant if necessary.
- Only continue driving when the symbol has gone out.
- If necessary, ask a specialist for help.
If the coolant level is correct, a fault in the radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunction.
If the alternator warning light also comes on, the ribbed V-belt may be broken.
Warning!
Do not continue driving if the symbol
indicates a fault in the cooling system - risk of engine damage.
Engine oil pressure: malfunction
An engine oil pressure malfunction must be rectified immediately.
If the symbol
flashes in the display,
the engine oil pressure is too low. In addition to this symbol, the following message for the driver appears in the display:
Stop the engine. Check the oil level.
- Stop the vehicle.
- Switch off the engine.
- Check the engine oil level.
- If necessary, ask a specialist for help.
Engine oil level too low
If the engine oil level is too low, top up the engine oil.
Engine oil level correct
If the symbol
flashes even though the
engine oil level is correct, ask a specialist for help. Do not continue driving. Do not even let the engine idle.
Note
The oil pressure warning light
is not an oil level indicator. For this reason you must check the oil level regularly - preferably when stopping for fuel.
Applies to vehicles: standard version
Yellow symbols
A yellow symbol indicates a warning.

Fig. 17 Display: low fuel level

Yellow symbols indicate a priority 2 malfunction (warning).
A single warning tone sounds when a yellow symbol appears.
Check the displayed function as soon as possible. If several priority 2 malfunctions occur, the corresponding symbols appear one after the other for 2 seconds each.
Applies to vehicles: with driver information system and on-board computer

Low fuel level
When the symbol
lights up for the first time, approximately 8 to 10 litres of fuel remain in the tank. Refuel as soon as possible.
Check the engine oil level
If the symbol
lights up, check the engine oil level as soon as possible => page 254. Top up the oil as soon as possible.
Engine oil sensor faulty
If the symbol
lights up, contact a workshop and have the engine oil sensor checked. As a precaution, it is recommended to check the engine oil level each time you stop for fuel.
Light/rain sensor faulty
Automatic headlight control/wiper control faulty
When the symbol
lights up, the light/rain sensor is out of operation. For safety reasons, the low beams are permanently on when the light switch is in the AUTO position. You can always switch the headlights on/off using the light switch. If the rain sensor is faulty, all wiper lever functions remain operational. Have the light/rain sensor checked by a workshop as soon as possible.
Front brake pads worn
If the symbol
lights up, contact a workshop to have the front brake pads (and, as a precaution, the rear brake pads) checked.
Applies to vehicles: with diesel engine and diesel particulate filter
Diesel particulate filter clogged
When the symbol
lights up, this
means that the diesel particulate filter contains soot due to short trips. Drive for approx. 15 minutes in 4th or 5th gear (automatic transmission: position D) at a speed of at least 60 km/h and an engine speed of approx. 2000 rpm. The soot will burn off in the filter due to the increased temperature.
If the symbol
does not go out, have the
fault rectified by a specialist workshop.
You will find more information on the diesel particulate filter.
CAUTION!
Always adapt your speed to weather conditions, road conditions and traffic. Driving tips must never cause you to break traffic regulations.
Speed warning 1
If the symbol
lights up, you
are driving faster than the programmed speed.
Applies to vehicles: with dynamic headlight range control
Dynamic headlight range control faulty

that you are driving faster than the speed programmed for warning threshold 2. Slow down.
Applies to vehicles: with driver information system and on-board computer
Battery voltage not correct
If the symbol
lights up, contact
a specialist workshop and have the following components checked:
- Multi-rib belt
- Battery condition
Also observe the generator indicator light
Applies to vehicles: with driver information system and on-board computer
Bulb failure warning
The bulb failure warning monitors the operation of the vehicle's bulbs.
If a bulb is faulty, an explanatory text appears within 5 seconds when the bulb failure warning light
lights up. If, for example, the rear left turn signal is malfunctioning, the following message appears in the instrument cluster display:
Rear left turn signal
This additional message disappears after 5 seconds. If you want to display the message again, briefly press the CHECK button.
The reported malfunction may be caused by:
- a faulty bulb
- a blown fuse. See "Replacing fuses".
- faulty cable connections.
We recommend having the cable connections and bulbs replaced or repaired by a specialist workshop.
CAUTION!
- Bulbs are under pressure and may burst when replaced - risk of injury!
- On vehicles equipped with headlights with gas discharge lamps* (xenon lamps), handle the high-voltage component correctly.
WARNING! (continued)
Incorrect handling can be fatal!
