Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning System

Installing the Filter-Drier

~2min read

GENERAL INFORMATION.

The filter installed in the liquid line increases the

service life of the A/C system between flushes with R-

11. The filter must be installed

after the restriction orifice becomes clogged again or when replacing

the compressor due to seizure of moving parts. The filter consists of a screen and a fine

filter element. The screen traps large particles and the filter element traps fine ones. Refrigerant oil is cleaned of mechanical impurities by the filter

element. The filter is installed in the line between the condenser and

evaporator. There are two types of filter.

1) Filter without restrictor, installed in the high-pressure zone upstream of the

restriction tube. This is the preferred option.

2) Filter with restrictor. In this case the filter is located in the low-pressure zone

downstream of the restriction orifice. When this type of filter is used, the restriction tube is removed.

Remove or disconnect:

PROCEDURE.

1. Measure the length of tube to be cut.

a) Filter without restrictor – 51 mm.

b) Filter with restrictor – 70 mm.

2. Discharge the refrigerant from the system.

3. Cut the tube end at a right angle using a tube cutter.

4. Remove external burrs with a file.

5. Remove internal burrs with a file. Metal shavings must not

enter the tube.

Warning.

Metal shavings entering the A/C system will cause rapid wear

of components and system failure.

Installation

PROCEDURE.

1. Switch.

2. Electrical contacts of the switch and lines on the rear cover of the

compressor.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

4. Evacuate air and charge the system.

5. Connecting the filter to aluminum lines: instructions are enclosed in the

tool kit bag.

5a. Discharge the refrigerant from the system.

5b. If possible, select the filter installation location in an area where additional brackets can be used (for example, on the fender splash shield).

5c. Cut out a section of tube 120 mm long. Remove burrs and shavings from the

tube ends.

5d. Insert the tube end into the fitting bore until it stops.

5e. Tighten the nut by hand. Then, using a wrench, tighten the nut an additional 3/4 turn,

holding the fitting body from turning with a second wrench.

5f. Connect the second fitting to the tube in the same way.

5g. Evacuate air and charge the system with refrigerant in the sequence described above.

When charging, increase the refrigerant quantity by 420 ml compared

with the nominal charge capacity to compensate for the additional volume of the filter body.

If the system is heavily contaminated, replacement of the restriction tube may be required.
