Battery Inspection

PROCEDURE

1. Turn off the ignition and all electrical loads.

2. Disconnect the cables from the battery terminals. Disconnect the negative cable first and connect it last.
3. Remove the battery from the vehicle.

If the battery case is damaged, remove the battery while wearing rubber gloves to protect your skin from electrolyte.

4. Inspect the battery hold-down parts, as they may be damaged by electrolyte. If necessary, clean them with a warm baking soda solution.
5. Clean the top of the battery with the same solution.
6. Inspect the battery for cracks. If cracks are found, replace the battery.
7. Clean the battery terminals.
8. Clean the inside surface of the cable clamps that connect to the battery terminals.
9. Install the battery in the vehicle.
10. Connect the cables to the battery terminals.
11. Tighten the cable clamps to the battery terminals securely.
12. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the battery terminals.
