Starting System
The starting system includes the battery, starter, magnetic switch, ignition switch, neutral safety switch (automatic transmission vehicles only), and wiring.
When the starter is energized, current flows from the battery through the magnetic switch winding, the plunger is pulled in, and the magnetic switch contacts close.
At the same time, the plunger moves the overrunning clutch and pinion forward through the shift lever.
The overrunning clutch hub rotates on the helical splines of the starter shaft together with the pinion, which makes it easier for the pinion to engage with the ring gear of the flywheel. Current flows through the closed magnetic switch contacts to the field coil and armature windings, and the starter armature begins to rotate together with the hub and overrunning clutch.
After the engine starts, the pinion speed exceeds the armature speed, the overrunning clutch freewheels, and torque is not transmitted from the flywheel to the starter shaft.
After the ignition key is released, power to the magnetic switch winding is cut off, the plunger returns to its original position under spring pressure, the relay contacts open, and the drive pinion disengages from the flywheel ring gear.
