Starting the Engine
WARNING
- Always wear appropriate footwear when operating the vehicle. Improper footwear, such as high heels, ski boots, sandals, slippers, etc., may interfere with your ability to use the brake, accelerator, and clutch pedals.
- Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move, which may cause an accident.
- Wait until the engine speed is normal. The vehicle may move suddenly if the brake pedal is released when the engine speed is high.
Starting the Gasoline Engine
Vehicle with manual transaxle:
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Make sure the shift lever is in the neutral position.
3. Depress the clutch and brake pedals.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Hold the key (maximum 10 seconds) until the engine starts, then release it.
Vehicle with automatic transaxle / dual clutch transmission:
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Make sure the shift lever is in the P (Park) position.
3. Depress the brake pedal.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Hold the key (maximum 10 seconds) until the engine starts, then release it.
Information
- Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle is stationary. Start driving at moderate engine speed. Avoid sudden acceleration and deceleration.
- Always start the vehicle with your foot on the brake pedal. Do not press the accelerator pedal while starting the vehicle. Do not race the engine while it is warming up.
Starting the Diesel Engine
To start a diesel engine when the engine is cold, it must first be preheated, and then warmed up before starting to drive.
Vehicle with manual transaxle:
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Make sure the shift lever is in the neutral position.
3. Depress the clutch and brake pedals.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to preheat the engine. The glow plug indicator light ( ) will illuminate.
5. When the glow plug indicator light ( ) turns off, turn the ignition switch to the START position. Hold the key (maximum 10 seconds) until the engine starts, then release it.
Vehicles with dual clutch transmission:
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Make sure the shift lever is in the P (Park) position.
3. Depress the brake pedal.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to preheat the engine. The glow plug indicator light (
) will illuminate.
5. When the glow plug indicator light (
) turns off, turn the ignition switch to the START position. Hold the key (maximum 10 seconds) until the engine starts, then release it.
NOTICE
If the engine does not start within 10 seconds after preheating is complete, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and wait 10 seconds. Then turn the ignition switch to the ON position to preheat the engine again.
Starting and Stopping the Engine for Turbocharger Intercooler
1. Do not race or rev the engine immediately after starting the engine.
If the engine is cold, idle for a few seconds until sufficient lubrication is provided to the turbocharger.
2. After high-speed or prolonged driving that places a heavy engine load, let the engine idle for about 1 minute before turning the engine off.
This idle time allows the turbocharger to cool down before the engine is turned off.
NOTICE
Do not turn off the engine immediately after it has been under heavy load. This may cause serious engine or turbocharger damage.
NOTICE
To avoid damage to the vehicle:
- Do not hold the ignition switch in the START position for more than 10 seconds. Wait 5 to 10 seconds before trying again.
- Do not turn the ignition switch to the START position while the engine is running. This may damage the starter.
- If traffic and road conditions permit, you may place the shift lever in N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving and turn the ignition key to the START position to attempt to restart the engine.
- Do not push or tow the vehicle to start the engine.
