Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)

~2min read

Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) is a function of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. It helps maintain vehicle stability during sudden acceleration or braking on wet, slippery, and uneven roads, where traction on one or more tires may suddenly become uneven.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions when using the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system:

  • ALWAYS check your speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead. VSM is not a substitute for safe driving.
  • Never drive faster than road conditions allow. The VSM system cannot prevent accidents. Excessive speed in bad weather, or on slippery and uneven roads, may result in serious accidents.

VSM Operation

VSM Operating Status

VSM operates when:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is turned on.
  • The vehicle speed is above approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) on a curved road.
  • The vehicle speed is approximately above 20 km/h when braking on an uneven road.

During Operation

When you apply the brake under conditions that may activate ESC, you may hear noise from the brake or feel a corresponding sensation in the brake pedal. This is normal and means that your VSM is active.

Information

VSM does not operate when:

  • Driving on a sloped road, such as a grade or incline.
  • Driving in reverse.
  • The ESC OFF indicator light comes on.
  • EPS (Electric Power Steering) warning light (Hyundai i30. (VSM)) comes on or flashes.

WARNING

If the ESC indicator light ( Hyundai i30. (VSM) ) or the EPS warning light ( Hyundai i30. (VSM) ) stays on or flashes, there may be a malfunction in the VSM system. When the warning light comes on, we recommend that the vehicle be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

NOTICE

Driving with wheels and tires of different sizes may cause the VSM system to malfunction. Before replacing tires, make sure that all four tires and wheels are the same size. Never drive the vehicle with tires and wheels of different sizes installed.
