Description and Operation

Description

The Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) system advances or retards the intake and exhaust valve timing according to the ECM control signal, which is calculated from engine speed and load. By controlling CVVT, valve overlap or underlap is produced, which improves fuel economy, reduces exhaust emissions (NOx, HC), and improves engine performance by reducing pumping losses, creating an internal exhaust gas recirculation effect, improving combustion stability and volumetric efficiency, and increasing expansion work. This system consists of the CVVT Oil Control Valve (OCV), which supplies engine oil to the cam phaser or shuts off engine oil from the cam phaser according to the ECM Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control signal; the CVVT Oil Temperature Sensor (OTS), which measures engine oil temperature; and the Cam Phaser, which changes the camshaft phase using hydraulic oil pressure. Engine oil supplied through the CVVT oil control valve changes the camshaft phase in the direction of rotation (intake advance/exhaust retard) or in the opposite direction (intake retard/exhaust advance) by rotating the rotor connected to the camshaft inside the cam phaser.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.
  2. Disconnect the OPS connector.
  3. Remove the OPS.
  4. After immersing the sensor thermistor in engine coolant, measure the resistance between OPS terminals 2 and 4.
  5. Make sure the resistance is within specification.
