Description and Operation

Description

The Continuous Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) system advances or retards the intake and exhaust valve timing according to the ECM control signal, which is calculated based on engine speed and load. By controlling CVVT, valve overlap or underlap is changed, which in turn improves fuel economy, reduces exhaust emissions (NOx, HC), and improves engine performance by reducing pumping losses, creating an internal exhaust gas recirculation effect, improving combustion stability, improving volumetric efficiency, and increasing expansion work. This system consists of the CVVT Oil Control Valve (OCV), which supplies engine oil to the cam phaser or drains engine oil from the cam phaser according to the ECM PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control signal; the CVVT Oil Temperature Sensor (OTS), which measures engine oil temperature; and the Cam Phaser, which changes the camshaft phase using the hydraulic force of the engine oil. Engine oil supplied through the CVVT oil control valve changes the camshaft phase in the direction of engine rotation (intake advance / exhaust retard) or in the opposite direction (intake retard / exhaust advance) by rotating the rotor connected to the camshaft inside the cam phaser. Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.
  2. Disconnect the OCV connector.
  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the OCV.
  4. Make sure the resistance is within specification.

    Specification: 6.9–7.9 Ω [20 °C]

Removal

CVVT Oil Control Valve [Bank 1 / Exhaust]
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Remove the cylinder head cover. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Cylinder Head Assembly")
  3. Remove the mounting bolt (A) and remove the valve from the engine. CVVT Oil Control Valve mounting bolt: 9.8–11.8 N·m

Installation

Hyundai Palisade. Repair procedures
  • Install the component to the specified torque.
  • Be careful not to drop the component, as internal damage may occur. If dropped, inspect it before installation.
  • Apply engine oil to the O-ring of the valve.
  • When installing, correctly distinguish the valve and harness connectors for Banks 1 and 2 by color; otherwise the engine will run abnormally (see table below).
Items Component Side Harness Side
Bank 1 (Right) Gray
Bank 2 (Left) Black

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.
