Knock is a phenomenon characterized by undesirable vibration and noise and can lead to engine damage. Two knock sensors (KS) are installed inside the V-shaped recess of the cylinder block and detect engine knock. When knock occurs, the vibration of the cylinder block is transmitted as pressure to the piezoelectric element, and the sensor outputs a voltage signal to the ECM. Upon receiving this signal, the ECM controls the ignition timing by retarding the ignition timing, and then advances the ignition timing when the knock disappears. This sequential control can improve engine output, torque, and fuel economy.
