Transmission Ranges
When the ignition key is in the ON position, the selector lever position will be displayed on the instrument panel.
P (Park)
The transmission can be placed in P (Park) only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
In this position, the transmission is locked and the front wheels cannot rotate.
WARNING
• Shifting into P (Park) while the vehicle is moving will lock the driving wheels and result in loss of vehicle control.
• Do not use P (Park) as a parking brake. Always check that the selector lever is firmly engaged in P (Park) and fully apply the parking brake.
• Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.
R (Reverse)
This position is for driving the vehicle in reverse.
N (Neutral)
The wheels and transmission are disengaged. If the parking or service brake is not applied, the vehicle will roll freely, even on the slightest incline.
D (Drive)
This is the normal position for forward driving. The transmission will shift automatically through 4 forward gears, providing the best combination of fuel economy and performance.
To get the extra power needed for passing another vehicle or when driving uphill, fully depress the accelerator pedal. This will automatically downshift the transmission to a lower gear.
NOTE
Shift into D (Drive) only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
3 (Third Gear)
Use when towing a trailer uphill or for engine braking when driving downhill.
When the selector lever is in the "3" position, the transmission automatically shifts between 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. This means that it will not shift into 4th gear. However, the transmission will shift into 4th gear when vehicle speed exceeds a certain value to prevent the engine from over-revving. To return to normal operation, move the selector lever to the "D" position.
2 (Second Gear)
Use for driving on slippery roads, climbing hills or for engine braking when driving downhill. When the selector lever is in the "2" position, the transmission automatically shifts between 1st and 2nd gears.
This means that it will not shift into 3rd gear.
However, the transmission will shift into 3rd gear when vehicle speed exceeds a certain value to prevent the engine from over-revving. To return to normal operation, move the selector lever to the "D" position.
L (Low Gear)
Use for climbing very steep hills or for engine braking on steep downhill grades. When shifting into "L" (Low), the transmission will operate in second gear until vehicle speed decreases enough to engage low gear. Do not exceed 50 km/h in low gear. From the "L" position, only first gear can be engaged.
However, the transmission will shift into second gear when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed, and as speed increases the transmission will shift up to 3rd gear to prevent the engine from over-revving.
NOTE
• To ensure normal and safe operation, depress the brake pedal when shifting from "N" (Neutral) or "P" (Park) into a forward gear or "R" (Reverse).
• Fully depress the brake pedal to move the selector lever out of "P" (Park) into any other position.
• You can always shift from "R", "N", "D", "3", "2", "L" into "P". To prevent transmission damage, bring the vehicle to a complete stop first.
WARNING
• Shift into "R" and "P" only when the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
• Do not increase engine speed when the transmission is in reverse or any forward gear with the brakes applied.
• Always apply the service brake when shifting from "P" or "N" into "R", "D", "3", "2" or "L".
• Check the automatic transmission fluid level regularly and top up as necessary.
For fluid recommendations, refer to "Maintenance Schedule".
