Operating the Vehicle

Driving on Slopes

~1min read

Before starting a descent on a long or steep slope, reduce speed and select a lower gear. If a lower gear is not selected, you may have to use the brake system so intensively that it overheats and loses effectiveness.

On a long uphill grade, to reduce the risk of engine and transmission overheating, select a lower gear and reduce speed to approximately 70 km/h.

If the weight of your trailer exceeds the maximum permitted trailer weight without a braking system, and the vehicle has an automatic transmission, use the "D" (Drive) position while towing the trailer.

Using the "D" (Drive) position while towing a trailer helps minimize heat buildup and extends transmission service life.

CAUTION

• To prevent engine overheating when towing a trailer on steep grades (gradient greater than 6 %), closely monitor the engine coolant temperature gauge.
If the gauge needle starts to approach the H zone (or 130 °C), pull over to the shoulder at the first safe opportunity, stop the vehicle and let the engine idle until it cools down.
You may continue driving only after the engine has cooled sufficiently.
• To reduce the likelihood of overheating the engine and transmission, select driving speed taking into account the trailer weight and the steepness of the grade.
