Tongue Load

~1min read

The tongue load from any trailer on the hitch is an important parameter that must be measured, as it affects the total vehicle weight (GVW). Gross vehicle weight (GVW) includes the curb weight of the vehicle, the weight of any cargo in it, and the weight of passengers. When a trailer is used, the trailer tongue load must be added to the GVW, since the vehicle will carry this weight as well.

The trailer tongue weight must not exceed 10% of the total loaded trailer weight, up to the maximum trailer tongue load. After loading the trailer, weigh it and measure the tongue load separately to make sure the weight is distributed correctly.

If the weight distribution is not within specification, it can be corrected by moving items within the trailer.

WARNING

- Trailer

• Never load the trailer so that more weight is at the rear than at the front. Approximately 60% of the total trailer weight should be at the front of the trailer, and approximately 40% of the total trailer weight at the rear of the trailer.
• Never overload the trailer beyond the limits specified for trailers and hitches. Improper loading may cause damage to the vehicle and/or injury.

Check weights and loads at public scales or at weigh stations equipped with scales.
• An improperly loaded trailer may cause loss of vehicle control.
