Operating the Vehicle

Parking on Slopes

~2min read

As a rule, if the vehicle is towing a trailer, parking on slopes is not permitted. Unintentional rolling of the vehicle with the trailer down a slope may result in serious injury or death.

WARNING

- Parking on Slopes

Parking the vehicle with a trailer on a slope may result in serious injury or death if the trailer brake system fails.

However, if you must park a vehicle with a trailer on a slope, perform the following steps:

1. Stop the vehicle at the parking location. Turn the steering wheel toward the curb (to the right when parking facing downhill; to the left when parking facing uphill).
2. If the vehicle has a manual transmission, shift the gear selector lever to Neutral.

If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, move the selector lever to "P" (Park).
3. Apply the parking brake and stop the engine.
4. Place wheel chocks under the trailer wheels on the downhill side.
5. Start the engine. While holding the brake pedal depressed, move the lever to Neutral, release the parking brake, and slowly release the service brake pedal until the wheel chocks fully take the load.
6. Depress the service brake pedal again, apply the parking brake, and move the shift lever to "r" (Reverse) (manual transmission) or "P" (Park) (automatic transmission).
7. Stop the engine and release the brake pedal. Do not release the parking brake.

WARNING

- Parking Brake

It is dangerous to exit the vehicle if the parking brake is not fully applied.

With the engine running, the vehicle may move unintentionally. You or others may suffer serious or fatal injury.

Before Driving Away from a Parked Position on a Slope

1. With the manual transmission lever in Neutral or the automatic transmission lever in "P" (Park), depress and hold the brake pedal while performing the following steps:

• Start the engine;
• Engage the gear;

• Release the parking brake.

2. Slowly release the brake pedal.
3. Drive slowly until the trailer clears the wheel chocks.
4. Stop the vehicle and have someone remove the wheel chocks.
