Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
This system further improves vehicle stability and steering response when the vehicle is driven on a slippery road or when the vehicle detects a difference in friction coefficient between the right and left wheels during braking.
CAUTION - Tire/Wheel Size
When replacing tires and wheels, make sure they are the same size as the original tires and wheels installed. Driving with different tire or wheel sizes may reduce any additional safety benefits of the VSM system.
VSM Operation
When VSM is operating, the ESC indicator (
) flashes.
When the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system is operating normally, you may feel a slight pulsation in the vehicle and/or abnormal steering reactions (EPS - Electronic Power Steering). This is only the effect of the brake and the EPS controls and does not indicate anything abnormal.
VSM does not operate when:
- Driving on a sloped road, such as a grade or incline
- Driving in reverse
- The ESC OFF indicator light (
) remains on the instrument panel - The EPS indicator light remains on. Instrument cluster
VSM operation is turned off
If you press the ESC OFF button to turn off ESC, VSM is also cancelled and the ESC OFF indicator light (
) illuminates. To turn VSM on, press the button again. The ESC OFF indicator light turns off.
WARNING - Vehicle Stability Control
Drive carefully even though your vehicle has Vehicle Stability Control. It can only help you maintain control under certain circumstances.
Malfunction Indicator Lamp
VSM may be deactivated even if you have not cancelled VSM operation by pressing the ESC OFF button. This indicates that a malfunction has been detected somewhere in the Electronic Power Steering or VSM system. If the ESC indicator light (
) or the EPS warning light remains on, take the vehicle to an authorized Kia dealer and have the system inspected.
✽ NOTICE
- VSM is designed to operate at speeds above approximately 13 mph (22 km/h) on curves.
- VSM is designed to operate at speeds above approximately 6 mph (10 km/h) when braking the vehicle on a split-mu surface. A split-mu surface consists of two surfaces that have different friction levels.
- The Vehicle Stability Control system does not replace safe driving practices; it is an additional feature only. It is the driver's responsibility to always check speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead. Always keep a firm grip on the steering wheel while driving.
- Your vehicle is designed to be activated by the driver's intent, even with VSM installed. Always follow all normal precautions for driving at speeds safe for conditions, including driving in stormy weather and on slippery roads.
WARNING
For maximum protection, always fasten your seat belts. No system, regardless of how advanced, can compensate for all driver errors and/or driving conditions. Always drive responsibly.
