Driving Your Vehicle

System Limitations

~5min read

The FCA system is designed to monitor the vehicle ahead using the camera recognition to warn the driver that a collision is unavoidable, and to apply emergency braking if necessary. In certain situations, the camera may be unable to detect the vehicle ahead. In these cases, the FCA system may not operate. The driver should pay particular attention to the following situations, in which FCA operation may be limited:

Vehicle Recognition

- The camera is contaminated with foreign substances.
- Heavy rain or snow.
- Electromagnetic interference is present.
- The vehicle ahead has a narrow body (e.g., motorcycles and bicycles).
- The driver's view is unclear due to backlight, reflected light, or darkness.
- The camera cannot capture the full image of the vehicle ahead.
- The vehicle ahead is a special vehicle, such as a heavily loaded truck or trailer.
- External brightness changes significantly, such as entering or exiting a tunnel.
- The vehicle's movement is unstable.
- Sensor camera recognition is limited.
- The driver's view is poorly lit (either too dark, too much reflection, or too much backlight blocking the field of view).
- The vehicle ahead moves erratically.
- Light is reflected toward the vehicle (including headlights of an oncoming vehicle).
- Moisture on the windshield is not completely removed or is frozen.
- Foggy weather.
- The vehicle ahead does not have taillights lit, has no taillights, has an asymmetric rear lamp, or has its taillights misaligned.
- The vehicle is on unpaved or uneven, rough surfaces, or roads with sharp changes in gradient.
- The vehicle is driving under an overpass or inside a building.
- Sudden change in sensor recognition occurs while driving over a speed bump.
- Strong vehicle vibration.
- When driving through a roundabout with a vehicle or object ahead.
- If the camera lens is contaminated by window tint, film, water-repellent coating, damage to the glass, or a foreign object (sticker, insect, etc.).
- The camera or camera lens is damaged.
- If the vehicle headlights are not used at night or in a tunnel section, or the light is too weak.
- If street lighting or oncoming vehicle lights are reflected, or when sunlight is reflected on wet road surfaces.
- When backlight is projected in the direction of vehicle travel (including vehicle headlights).
- Road signs, shadows on the road, tunnel entrances, toll gates, partial sidewalks.
- If the windshield surface is covered with moisture or the windshield is freezing.
- Driving in fog.
- When objects are outside the camera's detection range.

- Driving on curves

FCA performance may be limited when driving on curves. FCA may not recognize a vehicle ahead even if it is in the same lane. It may issue a warning message and warning signal prematurely, or it may not issue a warning message or warning signal at all. When driving on a curve, be careful, maintain a safe braking distance, and if necessary, press the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance.

The FCA system may recognize a vehicle in an adjacent lane while driving on a curved road. In this situation, the system may apply the brakes. Always pay attention to the road and driving conditions while driving. If necessary, press the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance. In addition, when necessary, you can depress the accelerator pedal so that the system does not unnecessarily decelerate your vehicle. Always check traffic conditions around the vehicle.

- Driving on slopes

FCA performance may be limited when driving uphill or downhill on a slope, and it may not recognize a vehicle ahead in the same lane. It may issue a warning message and warning signal prematurely, or it may not issue a warning message and warning signal at all.

When FCA suddenly recognizes a vehicle ahead while overtaking on a slope, you may experience sudden deceleration.

Always look ahead while driving uphill or downhill on a slope and, if necessary, press the brake pedal.

- Lane change

When a vehicle changes lanes in front of you, the FCA system may not immediately detect the vehicle, especially if the vehicle changes lanes abruptly. In this situation, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, press the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

When driving in stop-and-go traffic, if the vehicle ahead stops and moves out of the lane, the FCA system may not immediately detect the new vehicle now in front of you. In this situation, maintain a safe braking distance and, if necessary, press the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

- Vehicle Recognition

If the vehicle ahead is carrying cargo that extends rearward beyond the cab, or when the vehicle ahead has increased ground clearance, additional caution is required. The FCA system may not be able to recognize cargo extending from the vehicle. In these cases, maintain a safe braking distance from the rearmost object and, if necessary, press the brake pedal to reduce vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance.

WARNING

  • Do not use the FCA system when towing a vehicle. Turn off FCA in the user settings on the LCD display before towing. Applying the brake with the FCA system during towing may negatively affect your safety.
  • Use extreme caution when the vehicle in front of you has cargo extending rearward from the cab, or when the vehicle in front of you has a higher ground clearance.
  • The FCA system is designed to detect and monitor the vehicle ahead using the camera recognition. It is not designed to detect pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, or smaller objects on wheels, such as luggage bags, shopping carts, or strollers.
  • The FCA system cannot operate in certain situations. Therefore, never test the FCA system operation using a person or object, as doing so may result in serious injury or even death.
  • After replacing or reinstalling the windshield or camera, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

✽ NOTICE

In some cases, the FCA system may be disabled due to electromagnetic interference.
