Transmission Ranges
The indicator in the instrument cluster shows the position of the shift lever when the ignition key is in the ON position.
P (Park)
Always come to a complete stop before shifting into P (Park).
To shift out of P (Park), you must firmly depress the brake pedal and make sure your foot is not on the accelerator pedal.
If you have done all of the above and still cannot move the shift lever out of P (Park), refer to "Shift-Lock Release" in this chapter.
The shift lever must be in P (Park) before the engine is turned off.
WARNING
- Shifting into P (Park) while the vehicle is moving may cause you to lose control of the vehicle.
- After the vehicle has stopped, always make sure the shift lever is in P (Park), apply the parking brake, and turn the engine off.
- When parking on a slope, block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- For safety, always apply the parking brake with the shift lever in P (Park), except in emergency situations.
- Do not use P (Park) instead of the parking brake.
R (Reverse)
Use this position to drive the vehicle in reverse.
CAUTION
Always come to a complete stop before shifting into or out of R (Reverse). You may damage the transmission if you shift into R (Reverse) while the vehicle is moving.
N (Neutral)
The wheels and transmission are disengaged.
Use N (Neutral) if you need to restart a stalled engine, or if you need to stop with the engine running. Shift into P (Park) if you need to leave your vehicle for any reason.
Always depress the brake pedal when shifting from N (Neutral) into another gear.
WARNING
Do not shift into gear while your foot is firmly on the brake pedal. Shifting into gear while the engine is running at high speed may cause the vehicle to move very quickly. You may lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident.
WARNING
Do not operate the shift lever in N (Neutral).
The engine brake may not function, which may result in an accident.
- Parking in N (Neutral)
Follow the instructions below when parking and you want the vehicle to be able to move when pushed.
1. After parking the vehicle, depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever to the [P] (Park) position with the engine start/stop button in the [ON] position or while the engine is running.
2. If the parking brake is applied, release the parking brake.
- For vehicles equipped with EPB (Electric Parking Brake), depress the brake pedal with the engine start/stop button in the [ON] position or while the engine is running to release the parking brake. If [AUTO HOLD] is used while driving (if the [AUTO HOLD] indicator is illuminated in the cluster), press [AUTO HOLD] and the [AUTO HOLD] function should be deactivated.
3. While depressing the brake pedal, turn the engine start/stop button to [OFF].
- For vehicles equipped with a smart key, the ignition switch can be moved to [OFF] only when the shift lever is in [P].
4. Move the shift lever to the [N] (Neutral) position while depressing the brake pedal and pressing [SHIFT LOCK RELEASE] or inserting a tool (such as a flat-head screwdriver) into the [SHIFT LOCK RELEASE] access hole at the same time. The vehicle will then be able to move when external force is applied.
CAUTION
- Except when parking in neutral, always park the vehicle in [P] (Park) for safety and apply the parking brake.
- Before parking in [N] (Neutral), first make sure the parking surface is level and flat. Do not park in [N] on any slope or incline. If the vehicle is parked and left in [N], it may move and cause serious damage and injury.
- After the ignition switch is turned off, the electric parking brake cannot be released.
- For vehicles equipped with EPB (Electric Parking Brake) and using the [AUTO HOLD] function while driving, if the engine start/stop button is set to [OFF], the electric parking brake will be applied automatically. Therefore, [AUTO HOLD] must be turned off before the engine start/stop button is turned off.
D (Drive)
This is the normal driving position. The transmission will shift automatically through a seven-speed sequence, providing the best fuel economy and performance.
For additional power when passing another vehicle or driving uphill, depress the accelerator pedal until you feel the transmission downshift.
WARNING
Always fully depress the brake pedal before and during shifting out of the P (Park) position to avoid unintended vehicle movement, which may injure people in or around the vehicle.
