Only the combined action of both systems provides complete occupant protection in a crash, whether frontal, side or oblique. This section stresses the importance of correct seat belt use and points out possible malfunctions, for example when belts do not latch or airbags are deactivated. Maximum safety is achieved only when both systems are fully active.

Opening the Luggage Compartment Lid from the Outside

• To open the locked luggage compartment lid, insert the key into the lock (1) and turn it clockwise (2). If the luggage compartment lid is opened with the key while all doors are locked, the luggage compartment lid will lock again after it is closed.
• To open the unlocked luggage compartment lid, press the button (3) on the handle and lift (4) the luggage compartment lid. The luggage compartment lid can be opened this way when at least one vehicle door is unlocked.
• Close the luggage compartment lid by pressing it down with both hands. Then check that the luggage compartment lid is fully closed. If all doors are locked, the luggage compartment lid will also lock after it is closed.
• If the luggage compartment lid lock/unlock button in the glove box is switched on (pressed in), the luggage compartment lid can be opened with the remote control.
• If the luggage compartment lid is opened using the remote control while all doors are locked, the luggage compartment lid will lock again after it is closed.
• The luggage compartment lid can only be opened with the main key. The spare key cannot be used to open the luggage compartment lid.

Do not attempt to open the luggage compartment lid with the spare key. The luggage compartment lock could be damaged.

Luggage Compartment Light

The luggage compartment light switches on when the luggage compartment lid is opened. It stays on until the luggage compartment lid is fully closed again.

Make sure the luggage compartment lid is fully closed. If the luggage compartment lid is not fully closed while the engine is off, the luggage compartment light, if on, can drain the vehicle battery.

Opening the Luggage Compartment Lid from Inside the Vehicle

To open the luggage compartment lid from inside the vehicle, the luggage compartment lid lock/unlock button in the glove box must be switched on (pressed in). To open the luggage compartment lid, pull the lever (1) in the driver's door trim.

If the luggage compartment lid lock/unlock button in the glove box is switched off (not pressed in), the luggage compartment lid can only be opened with the vehicle's main key.

If the luggage compartment lid is not closed while driving, dangerous exhaust gases will enter the vehicle.

This can cause serious or fatal poisoning of the vehicle occupants. An open luggage compartment lid also obstructs the view to the rear, which can lead to dangerous driving situations. If you must drive with the luggage compartment lid open, set the air supply to "Fresh Air" and keep the ventilation outlets open so that fresh air can enter the vehicle.

Opening the Luggage Compartment Lid from Inside the Luggage Compartment in an Emergency

Your vehicle's luggage compartment has a release cable for unlocking the luggage compartment lid in an emergency. If a person is accidentally locked in the luggage compartment, the person can move the handle in the direction of the arrow to unlatch the luggage compartment lock and open the luggage compartment lid.

Never allow anyone to climb into the luggage compartment. If the luggage compartment lid is partially or fully latched and the person cannot open it, there is a risk of serious or fatal injury from insufficient air supply, entering exhaust gases, and rapid temperature rise or cold temperatures depending on the outside climate conditions. Furthermore, being inside the luggage compartment is extremely dangerous because the luggage compartment is part of the crumple zone. A person inside the luggage compartment would be completely unprotected in a rear-end collision.

Luggage Compartment Locking and Unlocking System

The luggage compartment lid lock/unlock button is located in the glove box. This button can be used to lock the luggage compartment lid to prevent unauthorized access.

With Main and Spare Key*

Locking the Luggage Compartment Lid

Proceed as follows to lock the luggage compartment lid so that it can only be opened with the main key:

1. Open the glove box.

2. Switch the lock/unlock button off (OFF position) so that the button is not pressed in.

3. Close the glove box and lock the glove box lid with the main key.

If you must leave an ignition key, for example at a hotel or parking garage, proceed as described in steps 1 to 3 above and hand over the spare key to the attendant. The spare key can only operate the ignition lock and the door locks.

Unlocking the Luggage Compartment Lid

To cancel the locking function of the trunk lid, unlock the glove box with the master key and press the lock/unlock button inside the glove box so that it is in the pressed-down 'ON' position. In this switch position, the trunk lid can be opened with the remote control or the lever in the driver's door. The trunk lid can never be opened with the mechanical spare key.

With the electronic key*

1. Open the glove box.
