Immobilizer

~2min read

The immobilizer of the Kia Opirus reliably protects against unauthorized starting. An integrated transponder in the key allows the system to recognize whether the driver is authorized – only then can the engine be started. If the key is not recognized, the vehicle remains secured. This section provides guidance on avoiding faults and handling transponders correctly, so that malfunctions are prevented and the system is used effectively.

To protect against theft, your vehicle is equipped with an electronic immobilizer.

Your immobilizer system consists of a small transponder in the ignition key and electronic components in the vehicle. Each time you insert your ignition key into the ignition switch and turn it to the ON position, the immobilizer system checks and decides whether the ignition key is valid or not.

If the key is recognized as valid, the engine can be started.

If the key is recognized as invalid, the engine cannot be started.

Deactivating the immobilizer:

Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch and turn it to the "ON" position.

Activating the immobilizer:

Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

The immobilizer is now activated automatically. Without a valid ignition key, the engine cannot be started afterwards.

NOTE

When starting the engine, no other vehicle key (with immobilizer transponder) may be located in the area of the ignition switch.

Otherwise the engine may not start or may stall shortly after starting.

Use different vehicle keys only separately from one another to prevent malfunctions of your new vehicle.

CAUTION

The transponder in your ignition key is an important component of the immobilizer system.

To avoid damaging the transponder, do not expose it to moisture or electrostatic energy. Handle it carefully; impacts and blows to the ignition key could damage the transponder.

CAUTION

Do not perform any unauthorized work, modifications or adjustments on the immobilizer, as this may cause the immobilizer system to fail. Have all immobilizer work carried out by an authorized KIA dealer.

Immobilizer malfunctions caused by improper work, modifications or adjustments are not covered by the vehicle warranty.
