Fuel filler door

~5min read

The Kia Opirus offers a practical way to deactivate the front passenger airbag, which is ideal when transporting child seats. The key switch is clearly marked and linked to an indicator light in the instrument panel. This chapter describes when and how the deactivation should be carried out and which precautions must be observed. In this way, child safety is optimally combined with vehicle technology.

1. Switch off the engine.

2. To unlock the fuel filler door, press the switch shown in the lower driver's door trim panel.

3. Pull the fuel filler door outwards to open it.

WARNING

If the fuel filler door does not open automatically in winter, try to open it by tapping on it and gently pulling on it.

4. Turn the fuel filler cap counterclockwise to remove it.

5. Refuel as required.

6. To install the fuel filler cap, turn it clockwise until you hear a click, indicating that it is properly closed.

7. Close the fuel filler door and gently press the door into its latch. Make sure the fuel filler door is securely closed.

CAUTION - Refuelling

Pressurized fuel escaping from the tank can cause serious injury. Always loosen the fuel filler cap slowly and carefully. If pressurized fuel vapor is escaping, you will hear a hissing sound when the fuel filler cap is slightly loosened. Do not fully remove the fuel filler cap until no more pressure is escaping and no hissing sound can be heard.

WARNING

Fuel is flammable and forms explosive vapors. Be sure to follow the instructions below when refueling your vehicle. Failure to observe these instructions can result in serious injury, severe burns, or death from fire or explosion.

  • Before touching the fuel nozzle or fuel filler cap, touch a metal part of the vehicle at a safe distance from the fuel filler neck and the fuel pump to discharge any static electricity from your body and eliminate the risk of electrical discharge.
  • Do not get back into the vehicle while refueling. Do not touch objects or fabrics made of materials (polyester, satin, nylon, etc.) that could build up an electrical charge through friction. An electrical discharge could ignite fuel vapors and cause an explosion. If it becomes necessary to get back into the vehicle while refueling, touch a metal part of the vehicle again at a safe distance from the fuel filler neck and the fuel nozzle to discharge any dangerous static electricity.
  • When filling a portable fuel container, place the container on the ground first to prevent static discharge from the container during refueling, which could cause a fire. During refueling, the portable fuel container and the vehicle must remain in contact until refueling is complete. Use only portable fuel containers designed for filling with fuel.
  • Do not use mobile phones at filling stations or while refueling a vehicle. Electrical current in a mobile phone could ignite fuel vapors. If you must make a call, keep a sufficient distance from the filling station.
  • Turn off the engine before refueling. Sparks from electrical components of the engine control system could ignite fuel vapors and cause a fire. After refueling, and before starting the engine, make sure the fuel filler cap is properly installed and the fuel filler door is securely closed.
  • Avoid open flames at filling stations. DO NOT light matches or lighters. Fuel is very easily ignited. Risk of fire and explosion!
  • If a fire breaks out while refueling, if possible, try to smother the flames with a large cloth or similar object. If this is not possible, move away from the vehicle. Immediately notify the filling station attendant or the police and fire department, and follow their instructions.
CAUTION
  • Make sure the fuel filler cap is properly installed.
  • If a fuel filler cap needs to be replaced, replace it only with a genuine KIA replacement part or with a fuel filler cap specified for your vehicle. An incorrect fuel filler cap can cause serious malfunctions of the fuel system and/or emission control system. Specified fuel filler caps are available from authorized KIA dealers.
  • Do not allow fuel to contact the vehicle body. Any type of fuel can damage the vehicle's paint.

NOTE

  • Make sure you fill up only with unleaded gasoline.
  • If the fuel filler door does not open automatically in winter due to ice, press or tap lightly on the fuel filler door.

If the fuel filler door cannot be unlocked remotely

1. Open the luggage compartment lid (trunk).

2. Pull the handle shown to manually unlock the fuel filler door.

The fuel filler door system of the Kia Opirus 2003–2011 was designed with safety and ease of use in mind. It reliably protects against unauthorized access and allows safe refueling of the vehicle.

The numerous safety notes help minimize the risk of fire or explosion when refueling. This makes refueling the Kia Opirus particularly safe.

FAQ
